Did you try to adjust the color on your television screen or was that really pink you saw professional football players wearing on Sunday? After all, pink on pro football players usually doesn't happen.

But this week, the NFL got a bit of a makeover and shades of pink were all over the fields. In support of International Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the NFL allowed players to wear pink shoes, gloves, caps, and sweatbands. I even spotted a couple of pink towels on the sidelines too.
Since 1985, October has been designated Breast Cancer Awareness Month to raise awareness of the disease and raise much-needed funds for research and screenings. It is also meant as a major reminder to self-test, and to get your mammograms. (Yes ladies, I'm talking to YOU!)

If pro football players can go a giant step beyond wearing a pink ribbon by lacing up a pair of hot pink cleats, all women "of a certain age" can step up and get checked. I guarantee you, a mammogram is a lot less uncomfortable them a 300 pound linebacker, wearing pink gloves, smashing into you!
When was your last mammogram?

Excellent post! I do believe you read about my last mammo in last Monday's post! ;)
ReplyDeleteI watched the Steelers last night wearing pink and mixing it up with the Chargers...they were in a major battle. And, that one pales in comparison to the battle any woman with breast cancer endures.
ReplyDeleteI schedule my mammo just around Christmas time...that way I can't forget that I'm due to go...and so it's a gift I give myself.
Love To you and your 'girls'!
Those pink shoes look great! I had mine about 2 months ago.
ReplyDeleteI'm due for mine and will call and make the appointment. Thanks for the post.
ReplyDeletefor some reason I kept getting choked up about all the pink last night.
ReplyDeleteI love it.
(GO STEELERS :))
I like seeing pink on the men!
ReplyDeleteI hadn't heard about this, so thanks for bringing it up! My last mamm was the first part of Sept 2009. Good to go!!!
ReplyDeleteI was actually a little distracted by it yesterday. I asked at one point, "Is the BALL pink?" hubs replied that it was indeed not. "Just the laces then?" He assured me that nothing on the actual ball was pink. I figured by that point (half-time of second game of the day, plus a little time watching "The Red Zone") that the pink was just burned onto my retinas.
ReplyDeleteOh, and since you asked, I have mine regularly, faithfully, and annually.
Wasn't all that pink cute? I loved seeing all those big, burly guys supporting the cause in that way. I turn 40 next month, so I haven't had a mammogram yet, but probably will schedule one, as my aunt died at 39 from breast cancer.
ReplyDeleteJust had mine last week. I get mine for my birthday every year. It's an easy way to remember and great gift to myself.
ReplyDeleteAwesome post! Plan to share with my sister who is the nurse navigator for the breast center in the neighboring town.
ReplyDeleteLast mammo - hmmm...just had 2 and was supposed to have a MRI, but freaked out due to claustrophobia (I'm clean - docs just ultra careful because 2 of my sisters are breast cancer survivors and I am a survivor of endometrial cancer).
Great picture! Thanks for the post and reminder. The big 'ole RV comes to my work every Spring. That's when I get mine.
ReplyDeleteGreat images.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE the pink cleats!!
ReplyDeleteOur Jaguars wore them too yesterday (and oddly, they beat the Titans... woot woot). I think they look awesome! Fantastic idea, and very eye-catching.
Which is exactly the point. Bravo!
Oh... had my annual mammogram last Thursday with a bone density test for dessert! I was in and out in thirty minutes. Awesome!
ReplyDeleteWhat a cool thing for the NFL to do! Loving those pink cleats!
ReplyDeleteLOVE all the pink on the football field!!!!
ReplyDeleteAs always, you inspired me with this uplifting post. Love those pink-bottomed shoes on the football field, and bless those guys wearing 'em!!
ReplyDeleteMy paternal grandmother lost a breast to cancer, but survived. I try to do something every October to honor my grandmother and breast cancer awareness month too, whether it's posting an essay on the topic on my blog, or volunteering in the community. This month, I am meeting with the director of a breast-cancer support group at our hospital, and will be doing some volunteer writing workshops for the group. Thanks for the reminder that we all need to do our part!
Great reminder to all of us to self test and get regular mammograms. Nice picture too!
ReplyDeleteNot all men can wear pink but a 300lb line backer! There is no messing with that...especially for a great cause. I always do my before the first of the year! Have a great Monday!
ReplyDeleteMy last mam was a few months ago. Thanks for the important reminder and I love those guys in pink accents!!!
ReplyDeleteHa! Love those pics!
ReplyDeleteFabulous! What a great piece of advertising.
ReplyDeleteLove pink.
RMxx
Yes, I noticed that too and thought it's about damn time the men stepped up and started showing support for 2 of their life long playtoys!!
ReplyDeleteI did notice all the pink accessories they had going on... but have to say the pink shoes impressed me the most.
Geaux New Orleans Saint...yehaw!!
4-0 babe'
Love the photo. And thanks for the reminder - will get onto it!
ReplyDeleteI'm sayin'. Not only was it pink it was the brightest hottest pink I've ever seen televised. Great post!
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful fall Monday!!!
I thought it was awesome the players were "pretty in pink" for such a worthy cause
ReplyDelete(I'm overdue for it.......I know the importance of it.....will get one soon.....)
betty
That's pretty cool. :) Come to think of it, I have a requisition in my purse to schedule a mammogram appointment.. issued about a month ago. Thanks for the reminder. ;)
ReplyDeleteWearing pink - no matter how - is always a good idea. For everybody. :)
ReplyDeleteit was definitely interesting trying to figure out what was going on with the color clashes yesterday. raising awareness is important...for the ladies and the guys...we need to do our checks as well.
ReplyDeleteGreat post. I actually had a mammogram a couple of months ago. Pretty in Pink -- Love it!!
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful! I love that they did that. x
ReplyDeleteI thought that was a great gesture too. The coaches all seemed to wear pink-billed caps too, and i wondered if they would auction them off for charity or if they'd hang onto them as a collector's items.
ReplyDeleteAlso, in Mexico, their first division soccer league used pink balls and some teams wore pink jerseys too.
Real men DO wear pink!!
ReplyDeleteOur Colts players were wearing the various pink accessories yesterday. It was pretty cool. The dork next to me kept yelling, "Nice shoes!" to a particular 6'2" 296-pound lineman from the safety of our seats.
December 11 at 8:30.
I'm due....thanks for the reminder.
ReplyDeleteI'm loving the pink shoes. I had my mammo in March 2009.
ReplyDeleteCute shoes, where did he get them!! I'm due for a check. Very.
ReplyDeleteHi Joanna, I get a mammogram every year but sure don't like getting my boobs smashed. I know it is better than getting cancer though.
ReplyDeleteI like the pink shoes, too.
I thought that what went on in the NFL was wonderful!
ReplyDeleteMy nine year old daughter is standing over me "styling" my hair. She saw the pink shoes and said, "I like them, but he shouln't be wearing them - they're girl shoes!"
ReplyDeleteI guess she's jealous that he has them and not her. :)
From one over 50 year old to another - nice to meet you. I will stop by your site again.
Oh, my mammogram is on the calendar!
Thanks for a nice post to further this cause, complete with a picture of manly shoes.
ReplyDeleteMy wife doesn't like the painful boob squishing, but we know it's for the best.
That's awesome plus I have a thing for men in pink!
ReplyDeleteGood call on this one Joanna! I've been wearing my pink bracelet all week, but I actually never gave a thought to myself.
ReplyDeletethanks for the reminder !!
ReplyDeleteI hope all women run out now and get one !!
I have been faithful with my yearly "boob squish" for so many years now....my grandmother had breast cancer at an early age and survived and then had it again in her 80's....so they started me early !!
oops...and thank you so much for such a kind comment on my blog :)
ReplyDeleteI noticed that during last night's game--so nice of the NFL to take up a worthy cause!
ReplyDeletethanks for pointing this out - it's good advertising for an important cause. Do you know if there are any pink nascar teams? Pink tires would be cool.
ReplyDeleteDear Snarky Sister:
ReplyDeleteStop by when you can...I left something for you at my place!
I didn't know about that. I LOVE it!
ReplyDeleteI saw the pink and thought it was SO cool that they did this. My aunt is a breast cancer survivor - so proud of her! But I have to admit, it was a little strange to see the little pink flecks running across the green field. Lol.
