Cool Factor Upped-- Slightly

It's not everyday I do something considered "cool". And by that I mean cool by teenage standards.

I've gushed about my recently turned 13 years old Godson in this space more times than I can count, but it's never been about anything cool I actually did.

Well, today that all changed. I got the rarely seen "you rock" smile-- the one that curves the corners of his lips ever so slightly so as not to actually lose his cool factor, but enough for me to know I'm getting a thumbs up from him.

It was easy really, all I had to do was listen to one song over, and over, and over again-- Blasting as loud as my car's stereo would play-- With all the windows down-- For 32 minutes on the drive home from school.

Yes, I thought I would lose my mind, but it was worth those curled lips and sideways glance from my guy letting me know I was rocking it for him.

Although the song is still banging around in my head several hours later, and even though I have absolutely no idea why he requested the "Ghostbusters" theme song, I have to say, it totally made my day.

And yes, I'm easy-- I'll do it again for that brief, shining, "cool" moment.

Done anything cool lately?

Love it...yes I'm sure your ears are still ringing....but worth it to be cool. Enjoy your shinning moment! My teenager thinks I'm the farthest from cool! I stopped trying.

Ghostbusters, huh! Godson is eclectic and that shows endless promise.

I bow to your coolness.

Me? Not so much....unless you ask one of my pets. When I let them through the door of the house, in either direction, they think I'm the Queen Mother of Cool.

haha! i think you´re cool:)

Interesting!! I would have never guessed that the theme song to Ghostbusters was cool?? LOL!! I can only imagine how your ears rang. Congrats on your coolness!!

Now I´ll never get that song out of my head!! And I HATE that song.... :)
But I know those moments well. I have had them with my daughters and they are so special. :)

I have a feeling you have no problem being cool! Your Godson is lucky to have you.

The coolest thing I can do is not talk to them while their friends are around.

Now, don't get me wrong, I love the song, but does he know how old that song is?? As far as cool, well, I remember when I was 40, my daughter came home and told me her friends were surprised that I looked as young as I did... yeah, ok, guess I inherited good genes...and I still have that issue... I have to admit it gets annoying (sometimes)...

If you are cool to a 13 year old then you are for sure cool. "Ghostbusters" for 32 minutes at full volume. Wow!

diane said...

I think he was just messing with you.

(I'm just messing with you)

I loved the movie when it came out, but the possiblility of coolness would not tempt me to listen to fhe theme over and over at full volume! You DO rock!

Joyce said...

Now that is cool my friend! I too have listen to my three nephew's stages of music. Cranking it up and trying to break out in the moves. Enjoy! xo

I had to listen to three little girls rocking it to Rockin Robin - Jackson Five once. But Ghostbusters does trump J5!!! You go girl!! :)

I love it!!!

I ain't afraida no ghost!

I love that song. Occasionally, I will pull it out and blast it for myself.

I wonder what ever happened to Ray Parker Jr.? Actually, I don't. LOL. Very cool behavior, Joanna!

Luckily, I'm married to someone older so everything I do is considered cool.

Well...that and I have no kids to remind me how unhip I actually am.

TechnoBabe said...

32 minutes is never too long for a "you rock" smile, is it?

delicacies said...

Love it, that used to be my son's favorite song/movie.
Not sure I've done anything cool lately! I'm not even sure what my adult kids would define as cool?

I've always thought you were cool, Joanna!

Every now and then, I impress my teenage son with something he considers "cool". Most times, I think he just thinks I'm a dork! It's much easier to impress my 10 year old. She always thinks I'm cool!!

You are a "comeback kid"!

Now I've got that song knocking around in my head. I wonder how something that old can currently be "cool"!

I think I really am having a mid-life crisis because I *still* love this track and I'm bopping along to it now as I type. ('Bopping' probably isn't a cool word though, is it)?

Well, if we need a Mrs Cool around "who we gonna call? Jo-anna!" (Sorry, that joke just made me corny *and* uncool)! :D

Well, I saw the entire Ghostbusters film with the kids recently...

That song is definitely an earworm.

You ARE cool!

Nothing like acting like a kid to be kool.

I sometimes get my groove on here and play a song real loud and start singing and dancing around. One of those songs that only kids are into these days. Of course, I usually just get that blank stare from everyone.

Love the Ghostbusters. Even if the song was stolen from Huey Lewis. Still rocks. Kudos getting the smile from a 13 year old! :)

MOMSWEB said...

Yep, I've done the music drive with my teenager in this way also - coming home from school and driving to school can leave lasting 'cool' impressions.

deb said...

oh , as a mom who loves these cool moments, I' m giving you the knowing eyes.

Toni said...

You sound VERY cool indeed...I can imagine that song going around your head for hours after was all worth it!
Have I done anything cool lately? Not when it comes to other people's recognition but I have dropped £1000 on diving! Ouch.

Rootietoot said...

I've been uncool so long it's gone full circle so I'm cool again. I was listening to Mahler really loud one morning and my 20 yr old said it was "head bangin'!"

Grannyann said...

Yes, would you believe it. My granddaughters wanted to wear my sweater boots (see today's post http://www.anntuckerblog.com)
I almost passed out. Finally had to order them some. Guess I am not so 'unstylist' after all.

ChristineM said...

I'm so uncool that any minute now I'll be retro.... :)

Always rewarding when the young 'uns give that smile!

Awww...that definitely makes you feel young, doesn't it? Cool is...welllll...just cool!

Cindy La Ferle said...

I was just thinking about "sticky songs" recently. (You mentioned how "Ghostbusters" stayed in your head after this episode.) For some weird reason, I'll hear the damned "Beverly Hillbillies" theme song, or the "rawhide" theme song, going round in my head. Not cool, is it? :-)

Hilary said...

Well now I know .. who I'm gonna call. ;)

lisleman said...

Maybe you should play "I want a new drug" but Huey Lewis and the News. They sound very similar so much so that Lewis sued Parker (Ghostbuster writer) for copyright infringement. He could learn a little about our legal system in the process.

I thought it was really cool when my teenage daughter (years ago now) discovered the Beatles. She was asking me about the music.

anne h said...

Are you the coolest kid on the blogging block, or what?

blueviolet said...

The you rock smile is worth that earworm, definitely!!!

Cathy Clementz said...

HA! Ghostbusters, eh? I embarrased the bajeebers out of my daughter when she was about 12 by playing a cassette as loudly as I could, going through town...the music was calliope music!

otin said...

If I had to listen to the Ghostbusters theme for 30 minutes, I would be the coolest guy in the mental institution! LOL

CC said...

I have a student with a Ghost Busters t-shirt. And I say "Who you gonna call?!" and he looks at me blankly. Great.

Barbara Shallue said...

I'm very envious! From a 14-year-old? Impressive! The closest I've come to that lately...and it sent me over the edge...was my 23-year-old actually telling me I was becoming cool. Be still my heart!

lisleman said...

since you are the 'fifty factor' you might have some good suggestions for something I just posted.
Have a minute? please suggest - thanks

You so rock, Joanna! I'm sorry I haven't been around much lately. I've been going through some "stuff."

Your comments always make my day. Thank you for the compliments. I'm so glad we "met."
