Bye-Bye

I'm blaming it on my high school boyfriend, Roy-- He had no telephone manners whatsoever. At the end of our countless conversations-- you know the high school kind with long pauses, mindless chit-chat and lengthy monologues all about him-- When I'd say it was time to wrap things up to start my homework he'd say "Okay." followed by a CLICK.

He'd just hang up.

No parting with sweet sorrow, no see you later alligator, not even a single syllable "bye". Roy would simply drop the old fashioned, big, clunky telephone receiver into the cradle with a loud clunk.

I hated that and never forgot it. I've made it a point not to be that-- what would you call it-- rude, thoughtless, annoying, whatever. I'd make sure people I was connecting with knew I was saying a proper "good-bye."

So long story short, that's why 99% of the time I sign-off on my blog comments with my initials and why I sign my name at the end of each post-- That's my "good-bye" so to speak.

But, in the era of Internet shorthand, I'm one of the very few who does it-- And since my name, like yours, announces myself loud and clear before my comment, it's a bit redundant and stating to make me feel a little foolish, like I'm taking up too much space or something.

Hmm, what's a girl-- with a longstanding habit, to do. I'm not sure yet.

But I do know there are only a few days left to enter my

  1. I can relate to this...it's most likely why I always sign off at the end of my posts! We really are sisters by different mothers!

  2. I have the opposite problem in my family. I can't get them off the phone. When I say I have to get going, certain people start a new topic.

In our family,we always end with, "I love you bye-bye." Once in awhile my son slips and says it to one of his friends and then we all laugh.

  3. I am more like your old boyfriend. Say what you want, I say what I want, end with talk to you later. Get off.

You are right, you have a recognizable name online in blogland and people enjoy you stopping to comment. I know I do.

  4. I always sign off with "hugs". Plus I want to hug all my bloggy friends! Ha!

  8. I like the silver one. I went over and read about the whole project and, since I don't have a tree, I figured I wouldn't enter. But they are so pretty.

Sometimes my hubby and I get tangled up trying to say goodbye on the phone and it's always worth a smile or two. :-)

  10. Hmmm.... never entered my mind to sign off on a comment. Won't do it either.

I too remember those long conversations on the phone with a boyfriend. In my case the phone was in the kitchen right next to the den where everyone watched the one TV in the house. (showing my age!) xo

  12. I find this happening more and more with businesses...you do all that "Thanks--you're welcome" and they just hang up!

But have you ever noticed in movies and tv shows characters almost never say goodbye before they hang up the phone? It irritates me and draws me out of the story. I really am too picky for my own good sometimes!

  17. That is weird phone manners, but I know someone who, when we part, simply leaves. Really, walks away. No 'good-bye' or hug or anything. That's abrupt and kind of strange. But I TRY not to judge.

The gold ornament is my favorite and I hope to win!

    ciao, bella

  18. The silver one please! hope I win!

  19. Oh, boy. I know just what you mean. I can't stand poor phone manners, but sometimes I don't quite know how to get off the phone.

  20. I've encountered a few people like that old bf of yours. I just find it disorienting and bewildering.. kind of like walking away from someone immediately upon mentioning that you need to move on. Hopefully he wasn't like that face to face.

  21. I think a "good bye" is necessary too. I also think a "hello" is appropriate. My father is 84 and has answered the phone by saying "Yeah". Not every time, but enough that it still shocks me.

Love both ornaments. Any bling is good bling.

  22. I still end my emails to family with Love, and my name. With friends, I often put my initial. But not always - depends on what they routinely do. And at the end of a night-time text exchange with the guy I've been seeing a "sweet dreams" or "sleep well" or at least a "nite."

  23. I've entered your give-away, haven't I?

    Manners are important!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I say just keep doing what you're doing. Isn't it just like a man to just hang up. Guys just don't get it and the older they get, they don't get it still.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I always sign off on emails, letters and phone calls, too.

  26. TRUE STORY:
The other day, I ALMOST wrote in my Nurses Note -
    ..........LOVE,
    Anne

WOW! Must be all the Love all around us all!

  27. who gets photo credit on this post? I love the image!

  28. I always hated when people did that, too, just hang up with no warning. I think if you want to keep adding your name, don't worry about it :) And put me down for the gold one!

  29. It is always better to be overly polite than to take a chance at being thought of as rude. That's my opinion, anyway. So, do whatever you need to do to keep your peace of mind.

(Your old boyfriend was a dick.)

  30. Dick? Hang on, I thought he was a Roy? (Scratching my head..)

I reckon you could drop the sign off without being labelled ill-mannered, but not if it gives you a nervous tick (grin). It usually takes around twenty build-up's to goodbye when my family is on the line, we tend to say, yeah, well, lotsalove, take care then - oooh, hang on, did you know.. And then off we go again into another ten minute launch (giggle)!

  32. I totally understand hon. Ya know I get to talking along in a post and I think in my head anyway..I am speaking to each person who pops on by..so I don't want them to leave feeling like I had not offered something. I always feel like I need to close with something! Right there with ya hon.
    Hugs, Sarah
