Sundays In My City #46 - A Nice Surprise

Thanks to Unknown Mami for Presenting Sundays In My City.

It's hard to imagine that just a week ago hubby and I were in New York City on vacation. After countless trips to The Big Apple (Do people still say that anymore?), and having worked there a long time ago, I was pleasantly surprised to come across a Farmer's Market smack dab in the middle of Midtown Manhattan at Rockefeller Center.

Tucked between skyscrapers and across the street from the famous Ice Skating Rink, Hubby and I wondered the short block filled with the nicest group of vendors you could ever ask for...
It had all the usual Farmer's Market produce but it seemed even more fabulous to me because it was in the middle of the city....

There were numerous stands with samples of food and let me tell you, sample I did....

This sweet man was very popular...

...Because he sold these... I sampled, bought, and ate, way too many, justifying each bite with all the walking I was doing in the city. Ha!

I met the "Bee Lady" who sold honey from rooftops, balconies and community gardens in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queen. I bought a delicious jar....

...And spent the week dipping these homemade pretzels into the sweet honey. Again, claiming I was doing a lot of walking....

Since I would have needed to STILL be walking to burn off the enormous quantity of calories I consumed on our vacation, I SHOULD have been eating these.....

....But tomatoes don't really go with honey or moonpies... or vacation.

How's you Sunday?

  2. Great Sunday you had there JJ! Love the photos, I love tomatoe jam so who knows tomatoes and honey might go together. I will have to try. Take care. xxx

  3. They still say "big Apple" over here (UK). Love the photos!

  4. Well, Joanna, glad to see you out and about and having a wonderful time. As for tomatoes and honey, why not? I'm game to try it!!

  6. I love NY. Have spent countless days there (because I grew up not far from there). There's nothing like the little oasis-es you find when you least expect it. This farmers market was a great one. YUM!

    What a delicious find.

  8. Great photos. Hope you enjoyed every second of your trip.

  9. "The Big Apple" sounds better than "The Big Honey-Dipped Pretzel!"
What fun you had! A culinary tour.
Glad you are back, telling about your fun time!

  10. The photos are amazing! The produce and food stuffs look so yummy!! Fresh honey? I am drooling here!!
And the fact that you were walking all over town should definitely burn off those few measly calories you consumed. You just had to walk over 100 miles is all! No biggy!! Ha!!

  11. It's wild that a city of endless grit can be charming.
Glad you had a good vacation.

  12. One needs justification to eat honey or moonpies? I thought they were their own justification. Yeah...I'm sticking with that!

  13. Oh, the lovely things you can find at the farmer's market. Love going. Too bad you can find more than veggies... :)

  14. Hi Joanna, glad you enjoyed your vacation in New York. The honey sounds awesome. I agree with you that is really cool to have a Farmers Market in the middle of downtown. For me, the thing I like to eat in NY are sandwiches, the French Bread is like no other place and the delis there are the best. The homemade pretzels would be great to bring home and freeze for when you want a taste of New York.

  15. Moonpies would work with anything. What a great farmer's market and your photos of it are beautiful. I'm new here and will enjoy looking around your great blog!

  16. I do fancy visiting New York some day.

  17. I would LOVE to go to a farmer's market! The photos are wonderful! We just found out our "new" neighbors (lived there about 18 months by now and we'd never met them till a couple days ago) is keeping bees and has "homegrown" honey. He is also raising chickens to butcher and selling brown eggs! But it would be nice to have fresh fruit and veggies!

  18. Wow, I would have never have guessed that there would be a farmer's market in the middle of the city! We call those moonpies "whoopie pies" here in Maine.

  19. Those whoopie pies look so good. I could totally go for one right this instant! What a good breakfast that would be : )

The honey lady looks like tons of fun!

I am glad you had an amazing time. And I am glad you got pretzels instead of tomatoes. I think they would have gotten all squishy: )

  20. I love Farmers Markets, and finding one in New York makes it extra special!

  21. I know there are some famous NYC farmers' markets, but this is the first I've heard of one right on 5th Ave!

I'm quite sure there's a way to combine tomatoes and honey...but any support for small local farms gives you points in my book!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Joanna, I bet those tomatoes were sweet! Lovely market, thanks for the photos. Can't believe it's in the middle of the city, a good thing.

    ReplyDelete
  23. That all looks so good, but I would have loved those tomatoes too. We rarely have cherry tomatoes here and I love them almost as much as the real cherries. :)
Glad you had a good time in NYC!

  24. I love NYC. Not too many farmers there, though! lol

  25. How ironic. I just drove by a farmers market yesterday and said "I bet they don't have these in New York City." I guess I was wrong. Looks fun.

  26. Your colorful pictures are a joy to see this morning and your descriptions of your "finds" are mouth watering. No doubt you walked off all the calories and more.

  27. That was a happy surprise to discover the farmer's market in downtown NYC--I remember what a wonderful assortment of food vendors (with a roof) in downtown NYC when I lived there 40 years ago. Italian butchers, wonderful vegetables and fruits and cheeses. We have growers' markets here in Ashland, OR on both Tuesdays and Saturdays--it is pretty wonderful.

My Sunday is just beginning. Went to the beach yesterday, and today I plan to do some rewriting on A New Wrinkle, my musical play on aging.

Glad you had a good time!

  30. How cool! I used to live in New York (and I do still call it the Big Apple!). I love that there is a farmer's market right in the heart of the city.

    Happy Sunday!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Looks like you had an awesome visit and hey, New York has wonderful food, so I don't blame you for eating - you had to fuel yourself for all that walking!!

    ReplyDelete
  34. That is so cool! The perfect mix of both worlds. I love NYC, and I love farmer's markets.

    ReplyDelete
  35. That's one reason I love New York City--you never know what's around the next corner! Looks like lots of fun, and delicious to boot! Welcome back.

  36. I live in NYC and never even knew that market was there. I usually go to the one at Union Square. Beautiful photos! Thanks for stopping by my blog.

  37. Farmer's Markets are the best. And I agree--honey and moonpies go with vacations much better than tomatoes.

  43. Love and I have been to NY once for a week. Loved it a lot. Can't wait to return. I'm hoping that next year for our 15th we'll be able to swing it.

    Market looked wonderful.

  44. I love the contrast of the skyscrapers and the market in between, looks unreal. Those tomatoes look awesome though!

    ReplyDelete
  45. All that food looks so yummy. I wouldn't be able to resist either.

    ReplyDelete
  46. The tomatoes simply would not have provided you with enough energy. I think you made wise choices.

  47. Gorgeous colorful pictures! So cool to find in NYC hope you had a great time! Happy Labor Day!

  48. It sounds like being in paradise. I so envy you for visiting the New York City--a fascinating place. I am very happy you had such a good time!

  49. I have never been to the big apple, always wanted to go! That looks like so much fun! I justified all the eating I did in SF with all the walking we did, I think it balances out! =)

  50. Very unusual indeed. Not quite what you'd expect in New York.

    SIMC greetings....

  51. You are the second person whose blog I've visited that has posted pictures of their Farmer Market, I guess I'm going to have to put my tennis shoes on and head on over to our Farmers Market. Have a safe and blessed Labor Day!!!

  52. oh how i love a farmer's market and like you, the ones surrounded by cement seem like little miracles compared to the ones surrounded by cornfields...

but with that said, the one here in madison is outstanding in its field and people flock from all over just to see what its all about.....

we wimped out though this past weekend...too chilly to walk the whole square and went to a smaller one where the parking is easy....

sheesh, i sound like i'm 80 years old.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I love going to farmer's markets when I travel, but rarely actually buy much because few of the items are things you usually buy on vacation.

    ReplyDelete
  54. That seems so New York to me. It looks like you enjoyed your time. We stopped by a farmers' market on Saturday. Rain cut it short but it's always fun to have a look around. Thanks for sharing yours.

    ReplyDelete
  55. That looks like a fabulous market...and we don't think about what we are eating when we are on vacation. That is my favorite part!

    ReplyDelete
  56. I still think of New York as The Big Apple!
    Yum to honey and pretzels.

    ReplyDelete
  57. pretzels dripped in honey - sounds like a great combination that I've never tried. Sweet and salty I would guess.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Oh, what tempting wares! Everything looks luscious! We say the big Apple in the UK, coz we're - you know - European! ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  59. Oh, those Moon Pies....Lord have mercy.

    I just love NYC.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I love NYC!!! I know what you mean about eating and walking:)
