Thanks to Unknown Mami for Presenting Sundays In My City.
It's hard to imagine that just a week ago hubby and I were in New York City on vacation. After countless trips to The Big Apple (Do people still say that anymore?), and having worked there a long time ago, I was pleasantly surprised to come across a Farmer's Market smack dab in the middle of Midtown Manhattan at Rockefeller Center.
Tucked between skyscrapers and across the street from the famous Ice Skating Rink, Hubby and I wondered the short block filled with the nicest group of vendors you could ever ask for...
It had all the usual Farmer's Market produce but it seemed even more fabulous to me because it was in the middle of the city....
There were numerous stands with samples of food and let me tell you, sample I did....
This sweet man was very popular...
...Because he sold these... I sampled, bought, and ate, way too many, justifying each bite with all the walking I was doing in the city. Ha!
I met the "Bee Lady" who sold honey from rooftops, balconies and community gardens in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queen. I bought a delicious jar....
...And spent the week dipping these homemade pretzels into the sweet honey. Again, claiming I was doing a lot of walking....
Since I would have needed to STILL be walking to burn off the enormous quantity of calories I consumed on our vacation, I SHOULD have been eating these.....
....But tomatoes don't really go with honey or moonpies... or vacation.

ReplyDeleteI love NY. Have spent countless days there (because I grew up not far from there). There's nothing like the little oasis-es you find when you least expect it. This farmers market was a great one. YUM!

ReplyDeleteHi Joanna, glad you enjoyed your vacation in New York. The honey sounds awesome. I agree with you that is really cool to have a Farmers Market in the middle of downtown. For me, the thing I like to eat in NY are sandwiches, the French Bread is like no other place and the delis there are the best. The homemade pretzels would be great to bring home and freeze for when you want a taste of New York.

ReplyDeleteI would LOVE to go to a farmer's market! The photos are wonderful! We just found out our "new" neighbors (lived there about 18 months by now and we'd never met them till a couple days ago) is keeping bees and has "homegrown" honey. He is also raising chickens to butcher and selling brown eggs! But it would be nice to have fresh fruit and veggies!

ReplyDeleteThat was a happy surprise to discover the farmer's market in downtown NYC--I remember what a wonderful assortment of food vendors (with a roof) in downtown NYC when I lived there 40 years ago. Italian butchers, wonderful vegetables and fruits and cheeses. We have growers' markets here in Ashland, OR on both Tuesdays and Saturdays--it is pretty wonderful.

I love Farmer's Market. The closest supercool one we have is in Madison, about 1.5 hours away. Worth the drive...

ReplyDeleteoh how i love a farmer's market and like you, the ones surrounded by cement seem like little miracles compared to the ones surrounded by cornfields...
ReplyDeletebut with that said, the one here in madison is outstanding in its field and people flock from all over just to see what its all about.....
we wimped out though this past weekend...too chilly to walk the whole square and went to a smaller one where the parking is easy....
sheesh, i sound like i'm 80 years old.
I love going to farmer's markets when I travel, but rarely actually buy much because few of the items are things you usually buy on vacation.
