I was reminded recently that this blog, The Fifty Factor, is about midlife and that I haven't been talking about that much lately. After I yawned and rolled my eyes a few times at the much younger person badgering me about the subject, I figured I should probably take a crack at it.
But, I'm having a hard time thinking of anything funny about the 50-something years. As I've said before, I'm not liking them much yet. So I looked around and realized that I might have to wait until my 70-something years to find my sense of humor.
This video is of a 70-something speaker at the Home Instead assisted living facility's Caregiver of the Year festivities. Fast forward the video about 1:18 from the beginning. I promise, you will not be disappointed. And, if you're like me, you'll want to grow up like this lady!
Are you finding the humor in aging?

I LOVED that.
ReplyDelete:)
My getting older humor is a bit more... earthy. And I'm sort of afraid to share it.
Thanks for brightening my day.
Very funny! I remember turning 30, and loving it, but as I approach 35, it's weirder to me.
ReplyDeleteoh, Joanna this is so wonderful. thank you thank you for posting this.. I can't wait to share it.
ReplyDeleteBrilliant, Joanna LOL
ReplyDeleteI do think humor develops diectly proportional to age LOL
Perhaps when I reach 70 I might be able to write funny posts LOL
Love this ~ Eddie
I can only hope as I hit 70 and older, that I will have the lucidity and physical ability to walk and talk as well as she. So many people aren't that lucky.
ReplyDeleteThis was wonderfully entertaining. Thanks for sharing these laughs. Isn't 70 the new 55? That would make folks like us in our 50s really young puppies. ;)
ReplyDeleteShe is so cute! I love the humor! Growing old sucks bottom line....but I would rather be 40 ish than be 20 again hands down! I just want my body at 20 not too much to ask is it!
ReplyDeleteMy 40s were the best. My 50s -- ho-hum. Once I hit 60 the fun really started and so I declared 60 to be the new 40. You won't have to wait till 70, I promise.
ReplyDeleteThis is the best! I work with seniors during the week, everyday!
ReplyDeleteI love this generation of people the most!
This lady has brought about incontinence as I sat here in this chair and listened intently to her prayer.
In saying that I will close with a prayer, "And God. . . thank you that I chose to sit in the leather office chair!"
Really great video!
ReplyDeleteIf I couldn't find some humor in it this whole aging thing would really be the pits. It is not always fun, it is definitely not for sissies, but it is hard not to find it pretty funny at times.
ok thanks for the chuckles...maybe i need to find a little more humor in it...
ReplyDeletethanks for sharing that clip. I noticed it had over 4 million views and don't think the group she was speaking to even watch youtube that much. Youtube is great and educational.
ReplyDeleteAs she said we don't get to practice. Life is like that. I certainly don't like the aches, pains and eyesight changes but overall I find the upper 50's better than the upper 40's, of course there are so many things I can't find anymore.
That was a great video! I'd love to spend an afternoon with her!
ReplyDeleteAs for myself, I'm not finding much humor in the changes getting older brings. I'm beginning to get arthritis in both hands and it makes certain things, like writing or handling cooking utensils difficult after a short while. I didn't expect to have to deal with issues like that for another 10 years.
I'm finding lots of humor in the people who are older than me
ReplyDeleteShe is hilarious!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE her...! She proves that the one thing a person does not lose as they grow older is their sense of humour. Bless her...!
ReplyDeleteI loved this video and had posted it a while back. I enjoyed it just as much this time as the first time! And definitely I see the humor in aging everyday. 'Cause if you don't laugh, you might cry!
ReplyDeleteHer delivery is fantastic!
ReplyDeletemaybe it's a healthy sign that you are not focused on aging these days...stay young at heart! Funny video, wonderful lady.
ReplyDeleteI loved this! She is one funny lady!
ReplyDeleteWhat a funny lady! Thank you for sharing this:o)
ReplyDeleteshe is everybody's granny, yet so droll and funny.
ReplyDeleteAm I finding humor in getting older? Well, when I think I'm one age when I'm actually another was funny --the first couple of times. Not so much after that.
I try to find the humor in the changes my body is going through -- but that's mostly so I don't cry. How those young ones take their smooth, unvarnished skin for granted!
I mostly, now, want to mock the younger set who think they know everything. Can't wait for them to reach their 50s.....
perfect comic timing..Yeah, getting old sucks but there are some good aspects too. I’ll let you know about them when I find them. All the very best sweet Joanna..
ReplyDeleteVery good!
ReplyDeleteToo cute, JJ!
ReplyDeleteI'm liking the 50s so far (have just turned 51)... my kids have just turned 7 and 9 so perhaps that's why I fool myself into feeling and acting younger?
ReplyDeleteI sent this to my mom...warm fuzzies all over!
ReplyDeleteLoved this!!! Growing older isn't for whimps!!
ReplyDeleteHugs

I don't think you get this funny as you get older. I believe you're born with a sense of humor and perspective or develop it along the way. It's not the gift of age;)
ReplyDeleteI loved Mary Maxwell's humorous take on senior life! In fact I almost snorted out my coffee a few times as she spoke. Neighbor Joan would sometimes show up only wearing one earring!!
ReplyDeleteMary Maxwell reminds me of my wonderful Friday morning tennis ladies, all of them in their late 70s and older. I have played tennis with that group as a sub for at least 4 years now. Death and cancer have taken some of them , but the group, now dwindling down still continues to show up on Friday mornings at 9:30 am to hit the ball! Special ladies! Love them and they inspire me that getting old is just a state of mind..... thanks for sharing that wonderful video.
I love this clip, too. This woman is a gem, and an inspiration for healthy aging! As for writing more about midlife, no worries. You are in midlife, and what happens to you is, well, about your midlife. How you handle what comes your way, what you think about it ... all is good, all of it applies to midlife. Happy New Year, my friend!
ReplyDeleteWhat a dry sense of humor, and what outstanding timing she has. This was so darn funny. Thanks for the laugh.
ReplyDeleteAging is sometimes painful and often confusing and most of the time unwanted but a sense of humor helps as we keep adding years and experience to our eventual obits.
What a hoot!

What wit! What timing! I loved it and am inspired. Shall go and make notes for my own Blog.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on a POTW mention.
Got a minute - stop over - I gave you a shout out yesterday
ReplyDeleteOkay, that made me laugh and cry.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the POTW! :)
Okay, that made me laugh and cry.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the POTW! :)
Okay, that made me laugh and cry.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the POTW! :)
Woah. How did that happen? Sorry.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great post! Loved the video of Mary Maxwell's invocation! I hope I maintain a great sense of humor as I get older because I really do not want to be considered a "crotchety old goat" as some people I know! Although I am thoroughly enjoying my 40's and still feel young, there are the physical aspects of aging that are not so enjoyable...
ReplyDeleteThanks for the laugh Joanna!

Fifty something??? Honey, all I have to do is look in the mirror and I laugh! I adore this woman in the video. Thanks girl!
ReplyDeleteGod bless and enjoy the day sweetie!!! :o)
too funny...I am approaching another fifty something birthday...some days I feel 20 and other days not so much :) Thanks for a great laugh!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your POTW from Smitten Image! Great post.

I love being in my fifties, but I hope I can keep laughing about it when I'm her age. She's awesome! Thanks for sharing it!
ReplyDeleteOh Joanna, I love her. I got a book for Christmas called Cooking with Hot Flashes...I had to see the humor in that. I am really gonna spice up her meal next time my friend comes to visit. lol. Wishing you a very Happy New Year. I love you and your blog and no one needs to remind you what it is about. hUGS.
ReplyDeleteLOL... cute. Hmmm... I do know since I have hit the 50's I take my glasses "OFF" to read and those aches and stiff joints I have been feeling I thought was a thing that would pass- I'm still waiting!! xo
ReplyDeleteAging is a grim, miserable business.
ReplyDeleteHave a nice day! :-D
I didn't skip ahead, but listened to the whole thing. I really like that lady.
ReplyDeleteOh yes, sign me up to be just like this lady! What a hoot! I've always said that humor is necessary in this life. :) I hope you had a good Christmas and that as 2010 ends you are able to reflect on all the good that happened in the past year. Here's to 2011 being one of good health, happiness and lots and lots of humor! XX
ReplyDeleteShe's hilarious!
ReplyDeleteWonderful! Have a great and Happy New Year!!
ReplyDeletehilarious! thanks, sugar and most appropriate today! xoxoxo
ReplyDeleteHAPPY NEW YEAR!
One of my favorite videos. Not sure why aging doesn't bother me. Maybe it's my complete lack of common sense.
ReplyDeleteFabulous! Though should I be concerned that I can tick off quite a few of those right now? :D
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year to you Joanna! x
Thank you for starting my 2011 on such a positive and a happy note - that clip was great.;) I agree with you, she is a great lady, to be able to keep ones sense of humour, particularly when it comes to ourselves, is what will keeps us forever young.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year to you and yours,
xoxo
I absolutely do find humor in aging....but then I find humor in death, disease and destruction too.... :)
ReplyDeleteI both laughed and teared up at that. Aging. Such a mixed thing. I have it on my mind as I am sliding in toward 50.

ReplyDeletenicely done Joanna....50????....dam how about 72 and still truckin on the happy trails.....cheers and happy trails on the journey
ReplyDeleteFunny how humour can only grow with age.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year my Joanna.
Funny! Some days I find aging a real hoot. Other days I just want to cry. Hey wait, nothing has changed after all. Thanks Joanna!
ReplyDeleteAwesome. Thanks for sharing! :)
ReplyDeleteI wish we had the opportunity to go around again with all the wisdom we learned growing old the first time.
What do you suppose you would do different if you could?
Wow, sounds like a whole new blog post!
Happy New Year!
You know, Joanna, it's scary...I am only four years away from 70! Where did all the years go? And here I am about to be a grandmother for the first time in July!! I just hope I won't be a babbling idiot in a few years...wait a minute, I think I fit that description now!
ReplyDeleteI almost didn't click on the link when I saw how long it was. Boy, am I glad I did! She is HILARIOUS! I hope to see her 80 and 90 year old monolgues!
ReplyDeleteGreat post! Thanks for the laugh!
ReplyDeleteJJ, don't wait till 70 because everything falls apart just before that. It even hurts to laugh.
ReplyDeletePS: I loved the lady's prayer!!!
That was a really good sense of humour that this lady had.
ReplyDeleteGreat video/

That is hilarious, thanks for sharing that. I am just ignoring the fact I am getting old. There is nothing much funny about it I have decided and I refuse to waste too much time thinking about it either until its forced on me. My daughter has already starting complaining that she is looking older, YIKES! She is in her prime. We start the worry about it when we are young - its all ridiculous actually.
ReplyDeleteI dont look as good as I once did but I am sure as hell smarter and wiser than I once was (except for avoiding a particular clothesline that is). There is nothing much we can do about it but just enjoy the experience as best we can and stay healthy.
