Sundays In My City #28 - Art!

Unknown Mami hosts a great Sunday theme inviting YOU to get out and take pictures of your city and/or Sunday to share with the rest of blogland. Click HERE to see Unknown Mami's Sunday in her City today.

Friday was a perfect day for lunch with my gal pals and a trip to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art for a little culture......

We went to see the special exhibit by Pierre-Auguste Renoir....

It was of his later works-- Sorry, no photographs allowed but the paintings were of a lot of beautiful young women, mostly naked, a couple of interesting trees and some lovely houses in the south of France where he lived for a while. Although Renoir was clearly a great artist, his later works were not as interesting to me as some of the art installations outside by other artists....

This one, which looks like something I've seen many times in many different places was swaying in the wind....

But what I really loved was this huge installation-- All actual size light posts, by the way....

I want to go back and see it lit up at night!

How's your Sunday?

  2. I love Renoir.. I'm off to check the Portland Art Museum to see if we're getting that exhibit any time soon.

And although I don't find the light posts thing to be art, I do find it interesting.

  3. Its a shame you couldn't get photos, but I can understand why of course!

  4. Is there a significance with the light posts?

I thought you were back out here for the La Quinta Art festival. It's just down the street but I hang my head in shame in admitting that I decided not to go.

  11. Oh you reached out and grabbed me on this one. I love museums. And I love art. I would have been there in a heartbeat. I'm the kind of person that if I think it is artsy, then it is. It doesn't have to have a special name. Of course I respect and admire the great artists and I do like Renoir. My creative side was greatly enriched for two weeks in Paris. I never walked so much in my life but I didn't want to miss seeing anything even the beautiful art in the the little parks. It is everywhere. I hope you do get a chance to return at night and post a photo of the lampposts lit at night. Wonderful afternoon with your friends and you are a cool online friend to share it with us.

  12. Wonderful outdoor sculptures.. The first one was pretty cool. Love your Sunday feature. Rainy here in Virginia, so we're headed to a car show, admittedly not my first choice of recreational options.

  21. The city where I work has vintage-looking light posts like those all along the street that stretches away from city hall. I like them, they seem so retro and pleasing.

  22. Shame on me...I have not been to the museum in ages..No excuses I get into "the city" once a week to work at the store and my husband works near Fairfax and Washington..so what's my problem? I'm in the thrift stores thats what! Thank you for your visit !

  30. Visiting art museums and having brunch in their cafes is a favorite Sunday activity of mine. Since I didn't get to go this morning, your post is the next best thing! Honestly, I love your life, Joanna. You know how to live!

  31. Thanks for the tour! I was a LACMA member until I skipped town last year. I never went as often as I should have, but then, how often should one go?

  37. I like the light posts... they're very beautiful and I would like to see them in the dark too.

Thanks for sharing this. The outside sculptures are of more interest to me too.

  38. I agree with you completely. Renoir's later work is not as spectacular as his early Impressionistic career. I was a bit disapointed. But LACMA is a lot of fun any day.

  39. I'll bet you're right that it's gorgeous at night!

  46. In Florida, we have pine forests planted exactly like those street lights.

I bet your display is prettier. At least at night.

I always look forward to these posts Joanna. Makes me feel closer to you and prepares me for my trip to LA.

    Scared?

  47. Great pics, and some really interesting pieces. I love outdoor sculpture- It's one thing I really miss about DC, but I'm lucky that I live near a big park with a ton of outdoor sculptures thanks to the nearby art museum. Oooh... I think I just got my inspiration for my next Sundays post!

  50. I bet the lightpost sculpture is gorgeous at night!

Thank you for sharing, the pics are beautiful, as always :)

  51. I honestly don't understand why you can't take photos of the indoor art. Do they think you might be able to crop your pics and claim it as your own art? Or are they afraid the flash will fade the pieces? Either way, too bad you couldn't take pics. I love Renoir. I have three Renoir prints in my dining room.

I love the lightposts! It's not your typical artwork, for sure, but it's very cool!

  52. To me, art is like a lot of things; it just takes initiative. Everyone has fun ideas, but artists turn ideas into projects that delight us, and for that, I am grateful :)
