Sundays In My City #20 - Westwood, CA

Do you know Unknown Mami? She's awesome and she created a fun Sunday theme inviting you to get out and take pictures of your city to share with the rest of us. Click here for details and her logo and click here to see Unknown Mami's City today.

Several months ago, YnB at Two Yorks And A Bean put out a call for funny church signs. Of course, no matter how hard I looked, I didn't see one clever, interesting or funny sign in all of my travels.... Until this week. So with a tip of the hat to YnB, here's this week's Sundays In My City from sunny Southern California.

It's a lovely church on a busy street close to UCLA in Westwood, California. I was on my way to pick up my favorite Chinese Chicken Salad from Feasts From The East when I spotted this sign. A fast U-turn later....

.....I took these pictures. And then I noticed a motorcycle cop who smiled, waved and, and, and.... Did not give me a ticket for the U-turn. He made my day!

YnB has a new photo blog, Elemental My Dear. Check her beautiful work out when you have time.

And be sure to check out all the other great participants in the Sundays In My City feature. It's got quite a following from all over the world. Click HERE. Please think about joining in the fun yourself too. Unknown Mami is a great hostess and makes it easy to meet new bloggers near and far.

How's your Sunday?

  4. Yes I often see them...those funny church signs...but never have the camera with me when I do! I imagine this congreation grooving to a funky beat as they worship!

  5. Now THAT'S a great church sign, Joanna! I'd go to services there at least once, based on the sign alone. True.

The best church signs are down south! They defy description! Fabulous!

  9. I love the Sundays in my City idea! Of course, I live in a town where Sundays are pretty quiet, but I live right near an actual city that has some really cool architecture and events....just gotta get out there and do it!

(Oh, and I like funky little churches!) ;)

  10. A church with a sense of humor sounds like a good place to visit.
I'm glad the cop gave you a pass.

  11. Joanna being stopped by the cop would be an interesting post too :)

Interesting. And I also like your description of Sunday in My City and of Unknown Mami. I think SIMC is a special place :)

  12. With all the churches in Charlotte, you'd think I'd have seen a good sign, too. Not so far, though.

How's my Sunday? Not sure yet, I need to get off this internet thing and get it started!

  13. Blessings on cops with senses of humor.

Had it been me, Joanna, I'd have U-turned in front of an atheist having the worst day ever.

Love you and your awesome funky Westwood Hills Congregational Church. I'd so go to a service there.

    How was that chicken salad?

  17. Very cool. When I was in high school, we used to drive down from Thousand Oaks and go to Westwood on the weekends. Lots of fun memories.

  18. I love the funky little church! My Sunday is great, so far! Coffee, sipped slowly, rather than being gulped before getting off to work, and the newspaper.

  19. I'm touched you remembered!! I wonder how many people that sign has attracted (and resulted in actually going into the church!) ;-)

Thanks for the links, Joanna, you're one special blogger!

  20. It always makes me smile when I see church signs and congregational signs in the US. There is some real wit employed and I can see that i encourages people in. Unlike here - here you take it or leave it: there's the building, what-ya-wanna-do?! :D

  21. Great sign! I'll have to keep my eyes out for a good one around here. We have so many churches, there must be an amusing sign among them!

  22. Maybe it takes people from warmer climates to have a sense of humor.
Minnesotans tend to brood in the winter.

  24. From time to time, I see a billboard with a message from God. My favorite is:

"Don't make me come down there!"

Now I'll be on the lookout for clever church signs!

  25. What a fun sign.. good catch. And I'm glad you didn't get that ticket. :)

  30. Doesn't it make your day when a policeman doesn't book you when he actually could have!

A nice story and I am so glad you found your sign. Churches over here in Australia often have little notice boards on which they put quirky signs. I will see if I can nab me a couple with my camera.

    Have a good day.

  31. You should have invited the officer to attend church with you.

    :)

There are a few churches here who try to get our attention with funny signs, but I never seem to have my camera when I need it.

  34. There's a church sign by our house that often says:

    Okay fish fry here.

Because who wants a good fish fry? I prefer just okay.

  51. Good day, sun shines!
There have were times of hardship when I didn't know about opportunities of getting high yields on investments. I was a dump and downright pessimistic person.
I have never thought that there weren't any need in large starting capital.
Now, I feel good, I begin to get real money.
It's all about how to select a correct partner who utilizes your money in a right way - that is incorporate it in real business, parts and divides the profit with me.

You can ask, if there are such firms? I have to tell the truth, YES, there are. Please be informed of one of them:
