To say I was disappointed when our local Barnes and Noble bookstore closed was an understatement because the next closest store is 30 minutes in miserable Los Angeles traffic away.
I'm a big bookstore browser and could easily spend an hour or more each visit looking at various books for one that catches my eye... The one that says "pick me up"... The one that's not necessarily on my radar or the bestseller's list... The one that has the right size type, page cut and cover art that appeals to my senses and will entice me to actually read it from cover to cover.
Sure, I'm a Kindle girl, but I can't completely leave my beloved "real" books behind because I enjoy passing a good read on to my friends and family.
So when I was contacted by the folks involved with Enjoy Every Sandwich by Lee Lipsenthal, M.D., I was intregued because their giveaway offer included not only a $25 Visa gift card but also TWO copies of the book-- One for the winner and one for the winner to share with a friend. How perfect is that. The Giveaway is on!!!
My shelves are lined with numerous "self-help", inspirational and "how-to" books that I've read, reread and collected over the years. If my fav book store hadn't closed, Enjoy Every Sandwich is the kind of book I would have been on the hunt for. It's focus is to be grateful for something every day, and remember to live fully, love well and enjoy every moment.
The book is written by a young 50-something wellness doctor who walks-the-walk and has a great family, great practice, great life... and cancer. But this is not a doom and gloom book about dying. It's about the first 18 months of his journey with cancer and how he lived to the fullest.
I found it to be an interesting and worthwhile read. And, much to my surprise, so did my husband who read the entire book in one day-- Something he never does!

Dr. Lee Lipsenthal worked with Dr. Dean Ornish at the famed Preventive Medicine Research Institute. As medical director of the Institute, he helped thousands of patients to overcome their fear of pain and death and to embrace living life with joy every day. In his own life, happily married and the proud father of two remarkable children, Lee was similarly committed to living life fully and gratefully each day.
The power of these beliefs was tested in July 2009, when Lee was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. As Lee and his wife, Kathy, navigated his illness and treatment over the past two years, Lee discovered that he did not fear death. Instead of fearing the future, he took the time to practice gratitude, connect with his loved ones, and make every attempt to live a full life with each breath. Enjoy Every Sandwich is Lee’s lasting gift to his family, his friends, his colleagues and to readers.

Welcome to www.TheFiftyFactor.com - Joanna Jenkins
Joanna! glad u r back.. btw did u see the article in L.A. Times about Barnes taking their e-reader to the UK? its not doing well here cuz of competition and they figure it will do better in Europe? (don't think so). I still love books too...I know I will eventually get an e-reader but for now I have 12 books lined up.
Our B&N is hurting as well. I feel bad for them and for the loss of actual books. But, I rejoice at all the trees that are saved by Nooks and Kindles. I sold a bunch of books to Half Price Books a while back and the majority of them were just going to recycling, and that saves trees, as well!
Ha! My first comeback comment is on a giveaway post...What timing! (but you know I would have commented on any post you write!) Hope all has been well at your end!
I used to spend countless hours at my bookstore locally, and then I had kiddos, and cant get there as much as I used to, those were the days! Thanks for a super giveaway! My email: anashct1 [at] yahoo [dot] com
Thanks, Joanna! It sounds like a fascinating book with invaluable life lessons from an author who has such credibility because of his work and because of his impending death. We're all living on limited time and need to take in the wisdom of his words and thoughts. I was very moved by the video.
And I was also very sad to hear about your local Barnes and Noble closing! It's scary what's happening with bookstores these days. We're already 35 miles away from the closest book store (a Barnes and Noble) and would be terribly upset were it to close. My personal favorite bookstore in Southern California is Vroman's in Pasadena. Have you been there? It was one of my favorite places growing up and I still pay a visit whenever I'm in L.A.
that book sounds fantastic and something I will definitely pick up and share with friends. I think I might need to get a copy for our trip to Spokane on the 16 when I have my next bladder cancer check up and schedule surgery for tumor removal. I am always working on being positive and upbeat, it's the key to beating this I am sure!
Would love to win this book, I think everyday is precious no matter what happens, gratitude should be the number one thing to have each day and love for your familia and others, love your blog, happiest & healthiest of new years 2012 and water dragon on jan.22 2012 starting too!!!!..from mary jane s. at momanddad00@clear.net!!!!!
We only have one bookstore in town, and it can easily be walked through in about 20 minutes. I would love to read this book. Thanks for the giveaway luvsherfam @ gmail dot com
Sounds like a remarkable book, JJ! I will look for it at our B&N -- which, I hope, will stay open, for all the reasons you cited in your post today. We lost our favorite Borders, as did so many readers, last year. If B&N goes, I will be very depressed. I make more purchases when I SEE and hold the books in my hand. Amazon is fine and dandy, but I think we lose our souls when we lose 3-D bookstores.
This man inspires me. I posted his story and your giveaway today. His goodness, his zest, also inspired me to fundraise for water.org, and I'll be posting about that on Sunday. That's an inspiring story as well, getting clean water to villages and people who have to walk hours to collect safe, clean drinking water. We are so lucky and there are many who are not.
This sounds like the perfect book for me! I vowed a few months ago to start being more grateful and have been doing 5 things I am grateful for off and on in morning for the last 2 months. The only book I asked for for Christmas was about how to be Grateful and remember all that God has given me in spite of life's circumstances! Bring it on! Hope I win! :)
I would love to win this book. I have been through two cancer scares and want to be able to stop and appreciate life more. I am being monitored for cancer still but I think this is a great book for everyone to read. I would love to read it and then give it to one of my friends or relatives.
Trying for the 3rd time. I don't know what's wrong with my computer or ? Seems like ever since I got my phone and signed up for gmail (which the phone said I had to do)everything has changed. Can't leave comments as easy and my log in changed.
1st if two comments to say I blogged about this contest! And yes, I see what you mean about the link. I don't have my blogger profile available, that's the problem. I need to fix that.
What a beautiful person who appreciates each day without fear of what happens next. Knowing how to live in the present and appreciate all the wondrous gifts in this life is something to work toward.
I left you a brilliant comment earlier, but for some reason my computer would only let me sign in to the local college when I tried to post it. hmmmmm. whatevs. Can't remember what it was I said, but I think the jist of it was: Your blog is great and so are you. something like that.
Sounds like a wonderful book, and I'm a sucker for contests, so count me in! To be honest, though, I'm a pretty happy guy, so I think someone else who needs it more should probably win it!
I'd love to win this. We all need to stop and remember to live each day to it's fullest. This sounds like a wonderful book. Digicats {at} Sbcglobal {dot} Net

I am so like you, My Friend! I love going to the bookstore and here in Salem there aren't any bookstores or at least not like Powell's in Portland. So, I go to the library instead and breathe in the books. There's just something about the smell of a good book. Kindle just can't replicate that! I would love to win the book and if I don't then, I'll have to see if I can get it from Amazon. In the meantime, count me in!!
I would be excited to read this book. Everyone should live each day as if it were your last -- dance like there's no tommorow and all that! I really believe that. hobartsmama @ aol.com
That sounds like a terrific book and I would love to have it when I return from India in April. Since I am really never lucky, I'll just have to break down and buy it.
I am recovering from my first episode of Delhi Belly - or, as I call it, Mumbai Motion since I haven't yet been to Delhi. It totally floored me for nearly 72 hours.

ReplyDeleteHappy 2012 JJ, I truly hope it is opening well for you, and will be filled with only love, laughter, health and joy.
I'm a huge Amazon customer...but nothing takes the place of a great book store where you can smell and touch the books.
ReplyDeleteWhen I glanced at the small print on the cover of the book, I thought it said, "Lying each day as if it were your last."
I did a double take and then started to laugh and laugh and laugh.
Happy New Year JJ. Thanks for being such a supportive blog friend for the past month!! xo
There's something about turning a page...
ReplyDeleteLove books!!!
Hope your new year is filled with loving words.
