Cake?

Did you ever go on the hunt for something in your house-- You know you have it, it's big and usually in the way-- You see it all the time, but when you actually need to put your hands on it, you can't for the life of you find it?

Welcome to my world.

The item in question: A huge cake plate with a glass dome similar to the one pictured above. It weighs a ton and is only used once or twice a year. It's great when I need it but when I don't it's a monstrosity that becomes a pain in the you know what to store because of it's awkward size

It belongs to my BFF-- I store it for her because, well, it's so big she doesn't have room for it and, I use it sometimes. When she needs it-- which is almost never, she picks it up and brings it back when she's finished. She and I do this a lot since I live in a house that was previously owned and designed by a crazy woman that built the house around closets and storage. I'm lucky-- I have plenty of storage space.

When the cake plate first arrived in our home, I remember finding the perfect cabinet to put it and realized that if I turned the base upside down and put the dome on upside down that it turns into a huge bowl and I can stack stuff inside thereby not taking up so much wasted space.

When I discovered this trick, I remember thinking I was absolutely brilliant and was very pleased with myself. Little did I know it was intended to be a dual cake plate/punch bowl. *Ahem*

Today's problem-- Or rather the problem I realized at midnight last night I had was, I couldn't remember where I put the dang thing and BFF was coming in the morning to pick it up for a big party she's having.

So there I was in the dark of night, opening every cupboard in the kitchen, pantry, laundry room and garage. I've seen that cake plate and dome so many times that I knew it had something red inside. I searched and searched but the more I did the more I felt like I was staring right at it. After all, I see it All. The. Time! but now it was no where to be found.

Obsessed, I search until 2am before I gave up.

At 7:30am this morning, blurry-eyed, I opened the first cabinet in my kitchen and there, with bags full of plastic red silverware inside, was the cake plate and dome. Right in front of my nose.

I hate when that happens!

And a huge thank you to Davine from 53 Buddhas And Me who made me this beautiful beaded "I Can Do Anything" affirmation bracelet. It came all the way from Australia! With it was a message about her beading that made me smile.... She said "The reason all of my beads are relatively the same is because basically all of humanity is the same but, as you will notice, there is one bead that is different. That is your individual bead." I like that. Thank you Davine! Click HERE to see more of Davine's jewelry.

  1. Glad you found that cake carrier - I hate when that happens!
Congrats to PJ and thanks for doing the giveaway.
    I love the bracelet!

  2. If you hadn't found it, I was going to lend you mine! I have the exact same cake holder...I keep it on top of my refrigerator! I think I've used it more often as a punch bowl, though!

  3. I do not like to think of how often things like this happen. When I get too upset about missing the obvious, like the keys in my HAND, or the coffee table book the size of Cleveland that was right smack in the middle of my bureau, I remember my favorite absent-minded story.

Mom was baking chocolate chip cookies. She didn't smell them after about five minutes and went into the kitchen to see whether she'd forgotten to put the oven on.

NOpe. It was hot. She opened the door, no cookie sheet. She looked all over the kitchen. NOTHING. She then looked in the dining room and, nope. She called me into the kitchen and it was a mystery to me. I went into the garage, to see whether she'd put the tray on the car hood when she'd gone to get an ant trap because of a problem in the bathroom. We'd thought that a brilliant thought.

    Nope.

I opened the fridge to get a glass of ice water and there it was. She had moved things off of a shelf, crowding the rest of the fridge to make room for them.

All she said was your line. "I hate it when that happens."

Always this makes me feel better.

  4. I'm starting at my platter, on top of the fridge. I think I've used it once. And it really takes up a lot of room. Might be time to get rid of it.

  5. We've lost an awkward shaped roasting rack and a dog leash that way. The rack turned up weeks later in the basement, sitting atop a pot that was put there for storage. The leash showed up in Frank's jacket pocket back at his place when it belonged on the the hook at my place. This too, was weeks later. Feel better? :)

Congrats to PJ. And that's a lovely bracelet.

  6. I love stories like this....they make me feel a little less crazy.

  7. are we getting senile or what? i do this kind of thing much too often. in fact, people (family mostly) have been known to say, "did you really give it a good look, or did you give it a Tara look?" Thank you very much. Or something to that affect.

Congrats on your upcoming blogaversary! Time flies when you're having fun!

  8. smiles...we have one too...i am glad you found it...sorry you had to go through all the searching...i hate it when that happens too..

  9. you do realize if you kept a cake in it all the time you would know exactly where it was. Of course, this solution may cause other problems of which I take no responsibility.

  10. That could so happen to me. Since we moved almost two years ago, things stored in the garage since this house is smaller have been forgotten. Until you need to know where something is...

And early congrats on your blogoversary!

  11. There was once an "Outer Limits" episode about entities of some kind that tore apart and rebuilt the entire universe every nanosecond. It explained how if you misplace something it just means they screwed up and didn't put it back correctly. I continue to cling to this fantasy.

  12. I hate when that happens especially when you don't have a lot of hiding spaces! Glad you found it....hope you got a nap in there somewhere!

    ReplyDelete
  13. I have one of those also, but I can find it only because I had to hide it from my 3-year-old grandson. When he visits, he clears out my lower cabinets to play with whatever he finds. I couldn't find a box of envelopes recently and finally spotted the end of the box on a shelf.I had visualized the whole box, not the end of the box. I have a blind spot for familiar family faces in airports. Weirdest thing I've ever experienced.

  14. I have an old cake cover, aluminum I think, from the 50's. Use it all the time.
Just because your friend's cake cover was intended for a punch bowl doesn't make you any less brilliant, you thought of it on your own.
As far as finding things goes, I've downsized. It's a lot easier to find your stuff when you don't have that much. :) Have a nice day Joanna. xo d

  15. That's a funny story about the cake cover. You are indeed fortunate to have so much storage space, until something like this happens. Then you have no idea where to look for it. I laughed when you realized it was there all the time, you just didn't see it. I never do that! :-)

  16. Yep, it does. I fear it part of that 'Part~timmers' Farm Boy and I are always jokin' about!!! Heeehehehe!

So glad ya found it. I tore the place apart lookin' for my camera charger once fearin' I left the dang thing in Texas. It was in my briefcase for Kid's Church where I'd used it the week before. 'Felt so stinkin' silly!!!!

Congratulations to PJ, couldn't of happened to a greater gal!!!

Woohoo...three years??? How time flies when your havin' fun!

God bless and have yourself a glorious day sweetie! :o)

  17. Oh My, all I can say is this story sounds so familiar. And I don't even have the storage that you seem to have. I've misplaced most of my belongings and my mind on most days. I feel for you, so glad you found it and got a little sleep. The bracelet is beautiful, must check out here blog!!

  18. I have one that almost looks exactly like that and I was *this close* to selling it but now it's mine because I've always wanted a punch bowl. I'm so excited thanks for the idea!!

    ReplyDelete
  19. We have the same punch bowl/cake plate. We store it in the orginal box (the bowl over the upside-down base takes up even less space)--on the pantry floor behind the garbage can! Shhh...don't tell anyone! At least we know where to find it.

The designer of your house may have been crazy, but she sounds brilliant when it comes to storage. A lady can never have too many closets, imo.

  20. I am jealous of your bowl/dome. And thinking I am an idiot for never storing my cake dome upside-down to better use cupboard space. Brilliant!

  21. Reminds me of the year I hunted high and low for a vessel in which to layer a holiday trifle recipe. Finally found one at Target, of all places. It would also make a great punchbowl - so thanks for that idea!! Happy New Year, JJ!

  22. You were looking too hard. The good thing is that you found it. There is something nice about a huge cake plate; anything looks great in it.

I stopped over at PJ's blog and left a message. Congrats to her for winning your great giveaway.

It is always nice to hear about bloggers sending little gifts to each other. The bracelet is lovely.

Hope you are doing super wonderful.

  23. I totally identify - we must be Kindretd Spirits. I put some things away during Christmas and have not found them yet. *sigh

  24. Gosh, do I know that frustration way too well!!

  25. love your one of a kind bead bracelet what a great idea. Funny about your cakestand, I misplace things all the time these days. Congrats to PJ!

  26. Congratulations on your upcoming third anniversary of blogging! I truly enjoy your blog -- and especially this post because it rings so true for me, too!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Oh yes - I've been there. I lose my keys all the time!

Congrats on your third blogging anniversary!

  28. This is why it always puzzles me when someone asks: What do you do all day when you're retired? The answer is: Look for things!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Oooh I don't like when this happens to me either. I spend so much time looking and there it is in front of me. Since Christmas I have been trying to find some notecards I ordered for a friend and now I can't find them. I see myself putting them away so they wouldn't get lost if only I can see where!! Glad you found the cake stand. xo

  30. I love the dual use things like that. And they are usually so gorgeous, too.... As for not being able to find those things? Let's just say I had a migraine when my husband lent our "fondue pot" to a friend for New Year's Eve. When she returned it, I had to apologize to her, as he'd given her our mini crock pot. Oops.

  31. I, too, hate it when that happens. I am oddly comforted by the fact that a lot of people (or at least your blog readers) do the same thing!
I searched for a bag of buttons for 2 months, gave up, bought some others and then found them when I was looking for Xmas stuff.
    *sigh*

  32. This always happens. I think it worse when putting something away I purposely say to self, I'm going to put this where I know where it is. It's a sure fire way for me to never remember where something is.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I seem to have stretches of my life where that sort of thing happens, the feeling that I've seen some particular object every damn place but I can't actually find it anywhere. I think it's a sort of failure of the mind to correctly recall, rather like deja vu. Infuriating, though, I agree with that!

  34. I lost my eye glasses one time after trying on clothing in a store. I got clear out to the car before I realized I must've left them in the dressing room. As I looked in the rear view mirror I noticed I had them...perched on top of my head. I hate it when THAT happens!

  35. We all lose stuff here. My husband is fond of losing flashlights, so he goes and buys more, then we find them, then he loses them again, and goes to buy more. Now we having 9 of those huge Maglite flashlights. They come and go like teenagers, only showing up when you don't really need them.

  36. Om my, I had to laugh reading this, that happens here A LOT. Now I know to let my old clunky brain work on such things as I sleep - it truly does work for me, most times I wake with the answer!

I also love that idea of the individual bead in the bracelet - what a clever, sweet statement - and oh so true.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I just got done reading the comments and have to agree with CiCi, you could put a day old donut on a fancy cake plate and it will look fabulous.
Loved your friends comments, nice group of people. xo d

  38. Usually when I wake up the next morning I still can't find it. lol

At least the end result worked out.

  39. aaah..... I feel your pain..... the other day I left my phone at home.....I knew I had cos I'd searched all through my bag....... got home, no phone..... somehow it was in my bag!!
