Sundays In My City #66 - The Wall

Travel the world with
Unknown Mami's

I've driven past this unusual art exhibit on Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles numerous time over the past few years but finally stopped to actually see what it's about....

It's a series of murals painted on actual pieces of the Berlin Wall...

This public arts program is the official United States commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall-- which actually came down November 9, 1989.

  9. I love when art is used on something that once represented something so negative. When we visited Berlin it was nice to see the murals and tributes to the lives lost while crossing the wall. Awesome shots and have a wonderful Sunday!

  10. This is truly interesting. Murals are awesome but painted on a historic piece as this is makes it very special.

  15. Excellent! Where on Wilshire? My LA office is right by the tar pits, and I wanna check it out next time I'm in town...um...which will probably be, like, tomorrow.

I was an exchange student in Germany in 1984, before the wall came down, and we took a week trip to Berlin. I remember thinking how cool the art was on the wall, and wondered whether there'd been any efforts to preserve it when the wall came down. I remember watching people chiseling out chips when the wall fell, and thought, 'Wow. Cool, and yet sad that such incredible graffiti and art would be lost."

  17. Wow, that is a really cool mural. And to think it is part of the Berlin Wall. I still remember that day, when the wall came down...

  18. That's totally awesome. I recall when it came down, as I was teaching 9th grade Social Studies. My students were bored and bewildered by my enthusiasm. Great idea to showcase history.

  22. what a cool idea. they have a movement here to paint giant murals on the buildings in the historic part of town. everyone seems to love the idea. i think it looks like graffiti. (interesting tidbit- it´s an american who came up with the idea...)
i loved your last post btw.
    sending lots of love joanna!

  25. I like wall art- it adds a ray of color to ones day. xo

  26. I remember that day vividly. I was 21, newly married, newly parenting. I remember thinking it was cool but not really getting the politics of it all. Sometimes I wish I could go back to experiencing things more simply, not having politics so prominent in my life. It's draining.

Love the artwork, by the way. Sorry, I just got to reminiscing.

    Cheers,

    Casey

  30. Interesting - I hope people remember why it was put up in Berlin. Maybe they will do this when it is finished but having Kennedy on one end and Reagan all the way on the other would be very symbolic.

  31. Love this exhibition. Very symbollic.

  32. Bet you're happy you finally stopped to check it out. Great shots.

  34. I love street art -- the colors, the creativity of it all. Looks like you had a wonderful Sunday!

  35. Interesting. I never really thought about what happened to the wall once it really came down. I remember the pictures of people hacking at it and just assumed it had all been destroyed. I think I like this better.

  36. Very cool!! Love the shots and your awesome blog too.

    Have a nice day!

  38. Interesting....thankyou....smiles.

  39. That looks so familiar but I'm not sure where it's located. I'm so glad that there isn't graffiti all over it. I hate when someone decides to destroy beautiful artwork.

Thanks for your words, JJ. Miss you. Hope you'll come out to visit Oregon soon.

  40. I have never heard of this crazy cool project! It's fantastic -- and I probably wouldn't have heard about it if not for your blog. So glad you stopped to see it.

My Sunday? You don't wanna know. But it will get better.

  41. That's one hell of an art exhibition JJ - history turned into art without forgetting its original purpose? Amazing juxtaposition! x

  42. You posted murals and I graffitis - what's the difference? For me they look the same... :)
Sorry I'm late but I've been sick...
