Sent From Heaven?

There has been extensive debate in our household over getting a very big guard dog ever since our home was robbed.  There is a long list of "pros" for a dog, not the least of which is the police detective strongly suggested we get one.

Then there's the list of "cons".  Dog hair, nail scratches on our hardwood floors and the ever necessary "poop bag" when walking the dog multiple times throughout the day.  Truth be told, the poop bag is really the biggest reason I've nixed the dog idea since I'd be the one carrying around the poop.

But out of the blue today, the dog debate took a major turn!  Not only did we get a really big dog-- We got a fearless guard dog to stand watch over our house-- Literally!

Fido arrived, much to our surprise, front and center on our roof (!) for all the world to see.

It's as if this lovely pooch was dropped from the heavens to protect us.

Unfortunately, the dog belongs to our next door neighbor...

...And we have absolutely no idea how she got on our roof.

No.  Idea.  Whatsoever!  It's a total mystery.

I kinda wished Fido could stay up there but the neighbors asked for her back.

Have you ever had an unexpected/unexplained visitor?

  1. Awww - Fido looks great! You could get a smaller dog, but one that barks to make you feel safer and scare away potential robbers?

  2. haha! this is too funny.i think it´s a sign that you should rethink your decision. the poop bag isn´t such a big deal. :)

  3. A flying dog? The poop problem just got more interesting.

I have two dogs that I take on daily walks. I rarely have to employ our poops bags. It's the back yard that I have to keep clear, and then I use a small shovel and bucket.

  4. ha. must be hard to get the food up there too without making a mess...especially the water bowl...ha...

    too funny....hmmm....

  5. I walk my 2 dogs a couple times/day and the poop isn't nearly as bad as you imagine it will be. Neither of mine have ever found their way to anyone's roof, though. That's pretty amazing. If you do decide to get a dog I strongly urge you to rescue rather than buy!!

  6. LOL that is so cute and funny. I would be thinking long and hard about getting a big dog too. I don't think it's something you should do JUST so you have a 'guard dog' on your property. A dog should be brought into the family because you love that dog and want him/her to be a family member. And I know of dogs that have been killed by burglars just to shut them up, then they still rob you. Sad but true. You would be better off getting a really good alarm system, one that doesn't require long walks, poop bags and put scratches on your floor! Just my opinion of course... said this dog lover!

  7. Omg that is too funny!! I can't imagine how that pup got up there. Have a wonderful weekend!

  8. That is so funny!
I understand your hesitation. A dog is a lot of work - maybe you should just borrow the neighbors occasionally!

  9. Sounds like you have neighborhood pranksters! All in good fun, though getting Fido down might be a bit of a problem!

Too bad you can't hook up something that's like a motion-sensitive light only it makes barking and growling sounds that get more and more frantic and go for several minutes. I can see some problems with this -- like overriding it when you are home or when a bunny hops by but it would be interesting. I love dogs, but I know what you mean about having one. It's why I have a cat. Low maintenance. Even a good dog is high maintenance. And a big dog poops bigger.

No matter what, I hope you come up with a good solution. Being robbed is such a violation.

Hope you can stop by the Gypsy -- I know you appreciate quilting -- and I have something to show you!

  10. OMG! That is hilarious! How in the world did he get there?
OH well, maybe you can make a ScareDog statue to take his place.
    :-)

P.S. I am so sorry you were robbed. It's a terrible feeling

  11. Fido looks too cute to scare anyone away. Let us know if you solve the mystery of how he got there.
Getting a dog is like adding a family member (though most members of the family don't require poop bags).

  12. The roof seems more like a cat thing. It would be great if the dog could be trained to clean gutters.

  13. oh my gosh! obviously a very talented pooch!

i have 4 big dogs - i couldn't imagine life without them - dog hair, dirt, mud, slobber, big furry balls of love. (but i don't have to walk them, so no poop bags.)

  14. Maybe he just got his pilot's license and wanted to try flying your house? Just a guess!

When i was moving in here, in 2001, I didn't have my 3 dogs with me yet (they were at the house i was moving out of) and there was a black and white cat by the front door, who just invited himself in when i opened the door! If i had been petless, i would have let him stay.

  15. Oh, that's funny! I wonder how he did get up there? A mystery, all right. :-)

  16. Wow, that would be something to see that dog get on the roof. Dogs are amazing creatures. I get the poop bag issue, I hate those plastic bags that you put around your hand, grosses me out. We go to Petsmart and buy bags called Dispoz-a-scoop. And they have a cardboard handle area, a wire around the opening and the decompose really well. That way when you're walking you can hang onto the cardboard part. It's the only way to go. They have a website: www.healthprohygiene.com - it might make the whole idea much easier for you. Hugs!!

  17. Your post was interesting and fun! I'm the inveterate animal lover so I found myself with a few thoughts that mirror some of the ideas expressed by Chris and Dorothy. I'm not convinced dogs owe us anything, but if we choose to "hire" them for a job, then we surely must give them the love and the life that they need to be happy and safe. The poop? No big deal, but I did find Tammy's comment very interesting. P.S. I hope the neighbour's dog managed to get off the roof safely!

  19. That's funny - I wonder what he was doing? I go back and forth on the dog issue myself.

  20. It might be easier to get an alarm system. I like other people's dogs just not for me.

  21. I've been so out of touch. I didn't even know you'd been robbed. How awful and how very creepy. I am really sorry to hear that.

Alex and Laura...Harper's mom and dad...have two wonderful dogs. I am always so amazed at how wonderfully they do with a one-year-old. Such tolerance. She is hysterical when she goes into their kennels with them ( they are not locked in unless we are gone for a few hours but they like to sleep there ( probably to escape her!! )

How funny to see your neighbor's dog on your roof. Perhaps you could just borrow him occasionally to make a statement.

I'm headed back to India July 23...probably just for four months this time. I'm getting a little old to be so far from home for such long periods of time.

  22. Being robbed - so scary, Joanna!
One of the reasons we didn't get a dog was the work - no time to bring up another child. :) So I enjoy my friend's dogs instead.

Yes, yes, I brought chocolate - here it is!

:) Have a great week ahead!

  23. We had a cat adopt us when I first moved to NYC, right after college. Simply came in the open street-level window. My roommate fed it. The cat was ours. Sometimes ... you get a sign.

  24. It's unlikely you'll be robbed again but lights that trigger a tape of barking dogs is just as effective without all the cons of dog ownership. You'll feel the cons ten times worse if you and the big hulking dog aren't in love with one another.

  25. I am amazed at your story and photos.

I am wondering what the dog was doing on your roof, and how it got there...

  26. We had a cat like that. She belonged to next door but someone forgot to tell her that and shed somehow get in our roof and climb in through the upstairs bathroom window.

  27. Now that is completely hilarious!!!!

  28. I used to get a particularly unwanted visitor on a regular basis. However, I haven't had a visit for more than two years. Perhaps this is connected to the fact her daughter divorced me last year...

  29. Oh my.. what a great dog! Parkour Pooch!

  30. I just came from another blog where the husband just bought a dog guard on sale while shopping with her at Aldi, even though they don't have a dog! Sounds like you two need to get together! We have a variety of cats that come through our garden on a daily basis, sometimes a fox and a hedge hog has been sighted, but never on the roof!

  31. Oh, sweet pea! I just read your robbery story and totally understand that feeling! Our home back on Mt. Washington was robbed and it took ages for any of us to really feel safe again. Our home here in Savannah has an alarm and I set it all the time. We have motion sensors and all of our windows are wired. I wish you well! xxoxoxo

  32. How odd that your neighbor's dog appeared on your roof. If you feel you have a lot of time and love to give, get yourself a dog that will bark and alert you to danger. But as you say, there is work and time involved, not to mention the dreaded poop.

  33. What a really cute dog. I am pretty attached to my two granddogs, especially after living with them for six months. Amazingly, they are so good and gentle with Harper. She can even crawl into the kennels with them, try to eat their dog food, pull their tails and ears, and they just look at her adoringly. Of course, I didn't deal with their poop, only Harper's.
