Crave

It's interesting-- the foods people crave when they're not allowed to eat-- Like my mom who's still in the hospital (29 days and counting) and on a diet limited to chicken broth, cream of wheat, and Jello.

When the time came for a more substantial meal, her very first request was a Dairy Queen chocolate milkshake with whipped cream and a cherry on top.  I literally ran out of the hospital and into a hail/snow/sleet/thunderstorm to get her one on Thursday.

And in the blink of an eye it was totally consumed leaving a smile on Mom's face (for the first time in a very long time) as she practically purred the word "Delicious!"

What would you crave?

PS  I was in Ohio again all this past week and I'm heading there again on Friday so I'll be scarce in these parts for a while.  Please keep Mom in your prayers for healing and strength.

  1. Sending good thoughts for your mom. My mom just had surgery last week. I lost a lot of sleep worrying over her. She's special. As all moms are. :)

Awesome that you were able to be the one who brought her the milkshake!!

    :)

And safe travels back and forth.

  8. I hope that being allowed the milkshake means that your mom is getting better. I know that smile on her face was a joy to you.
When Doc was in the hospital last month and had a limited diet for a while the first thing he asked for was Raisin Bran with a banana.
I will pray for comfort and healing for your mom.

  19. I would have rushed to get one for my mom, too. But she has been gone so long I cannot even remember what she liked. I myself would have to have some kind of ice cream with chunky things in it. :-)

  22. Sending prayers for your mom and hugs for you!
I had a similar situation in Boston last spring when my sister had brain surgery. She found out at 6pm that her surgery had to be postponed a day because the doctor had an emergency case. That meant she could eat dinner and not fast that night. She had a craving for a big, juicy hamburger. I was out the hospital door and on the T heading to Five Guys before she could finish her request! I'm sure you felt the same way - just glad you could do something to make the patient happy!

  23. Chocolate milkshake is a very understandable craving. In fact I think there are less hours in the day when I'm not craving one but that could just be me. Hope your mum is on the mend soon. :)

  28. I'd be saying 'Delicious' too if I'd been restricted to chicken broth, cream of wheat and jello for that long!
Heck, I would have faded away... now there's a thought on how to lose some weight!
I hope your Mum continues to improve and expand her food choices.

  30. Joanna, I've been out of touch for awhile, dealing with issues concerning my own parents and a new career, so I wasn't aware of yours with your mom. I'll be keeping both of you in my prayers!

  36. Hello JJ, I hope and pray that your Mom has improved. I know how she felt drinking the DQ milkshake. Today I had Dutch Apple Pie a la mode. It tasted SO good!

I hope you'll be able to get back to posting soon.

ps. I read this post a while back on my iPhone and possibly tried to comment. You may have another comment from me lurking somewhere. :)

  38. Given a time deprived of my favorite foods? I think my first request would be for spaghetti and meat sauce from a restaurant (The Pleasant Cafe, in Roslindale, MA) that I've been going to, off and on, for fifty years. Also some of their pizza (best in Boston, IMHO.)

  39. I generally give into things I really crave. The exception these days is a nice cold beer. Maybe I should try it, however, alcohol is contraindicated with my meds. Dianne
