Star Sightings

Star sighting below...
Friday Fragments

About ten years ago I felt bad that the March of Dimes organization kept mailing me a dime (10 cents) along with a slew of personalized mailing labels so I sent them $10 and asked them to please stop wasting their money on me.  My pledge was simple-- I'd send them money if they stopped spending it on me.  Made sense to me.  Apparently it didn't make sense to the March of Dimes because I now have a jar full of dimes and about 10,000 mailing labels. I'm sure this method of fund raising must work for them because it's their age old tradition for the cause but it's one giant guilt trip for me.

#####

Wouldn't be be nice if Word Verification was more meaningful-- like a word of the day with definitions or a person's name from history with a brief bio, or even winning lottery numbers-- anything but the hard to read gibberish they have now.

#####

I'm trying to watch Orange is the New Black on NetFlix, based on a true story about a woman in prison.  Let me tell you, it's a lot of work with plenty of cringing.  Not sure I'm going to make it past episode 4.  Do you NetFlix?

And how about those Emmy Nominations?  I'm guessing the big TV network guys have a lot of explaining to do.  No Best Drama shows from the "big four" which appear to be shrinking by the minute!

But, I'm so glad Downton Abbey was recognized and I loved House of Cards with Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright.

#####

And speaking of celebrities, I had three "star sightings" this past week.

First was the lavender-haired Kelly Osbourne (E! News and Fashion Police) at the local Thai restaurant Husband and I frequent.  I have to say, the lavender hair is really lovely in person-- way better than it looks on television.

And, I sat in on a fascinating Q&A following the movie Still Mine starring James Cromwell and Genevieve Bujold, both Oscar nominees.  It's a love story about a couple married for 60 years.  He wants to build a house on his land-- smaller and more manageable for the couple, but runs into problems with both the building department and health issues.  It's heart-felt and funny and sad and uplifting.  I enjoyed it very much.

As for the two stars-- absolutely delightful.  James Cromwell is well over 6' 6" tall and still has a school boy twinkle in his eye.  He's much younger than many of the rolls he plays and, honestly, he's kinda sexy.  Ms Bujold is a tiny little thing and stunning with a dry sense of humor and a love for her art.  I highly recommend Still Mine... if you can find it in a theater near you.  It's in limited release.

Have a great weekend.

  2. The movie sounds good. Love your fragments today!

  3. Thanks so much for stopping by my blog today!
I've enjoyed reading your FF, as well as the previous post. Gotta' love those 'lessons learned' :)

The movie you wrote about sounds like one I'd enjoy watching. Sadly, I can't say that about most movies, these days.

I didn't see the Emmy nominations, but I, too, am happy to hear that Downton Abbey got some recognition. I love that show!

  4. I like that idea about word verification. It is kinda crazy the combos they put up.

I wanted to check out that Netflix new show... & now want to try out the Kevin Spacey one. I love him anyways.... yep, the big 3 aren't so big anymore.

  5. Charities that send me a penny, nickel, dime, whatever are a bit of a pet peeve for me. Why are you mailing people money asking for money???? Wonder how much they lose that they don't recoup in donations?

  6. LOVE Cromwell and Bujold. Love 'em. Thanks for the title and tip.

Have you seen the original Masterpiece Theatre House of Cards (and its follow-up shows?) I liked it better than the Netflix and while a BIT dated style-wise, still holds up very well!

Words -- I LOVE it when I get a serendipitous word -- artista for an art friend or something like that! Makes me smile!

  7. I never fee I guilty about free address labels. If they wanna send them I wanna use them. Win/win. ;-)

  8. What an interesting fragment this week!!! I enjoyed it all. I've often wondered about Charities that so this sort of thing also. St. Jude's hospital does it through mailing, I agree...spend the money you spend on mailing for the ailing children!!

  9. aaaah. i so love coming here, now i want to know what your big four are... haven´t seen the nominations- but i assume neither nurse jackie nor the newsroom got a nod. did love house of cards.
    big big hugs jj!
p.s. great idea about word verification. :)

  10. I will find that movie and watch it. I'm a fan of both stars. And I don't Netflix any more, but I did once upon a time. I might start again but not any time soon.

  11. I hate getting labels and dimes too - that guilt trip gets to me as well.
    The movie sounds really good!

  12. I would have loved seeing Kelly Osbourne...lavender hair and all. I was really hooked when their reality show was on years ago.
I have done NetFlix in the past but I don't anymore. I have a Roku which has pretty much anything I want to watch (including Netflix). I will have to look for "Still Mine".
Word verification makes me a little crazy sometimes....especially on about the 3rd try. Any change would be a good one.

  13. I've finally learned not to feel guilty about those dimes and labels. I can give the dimes to my church and the labels often advertise the cause - and I don't want them to go to waste. We do Netflix - I got hooked on Breaking Bad. Talk about cringing! Thanks for the movie recommendation. It sounds like one I would really enjoy!

  14. The whole Osborne family fascinates me so a Kelly spotting would have made me fall out of my chair.

We get tons of the dimes, nickles and mailing labels too. We send a $5 check about once a year but gez I wish they'd get that we are poor and can't afford their labels and dimes/nickles.

  15. I'm not sure how I got out of getting those dimes all the time. I guess I just never made a donation.

    Have a great weekend, Johanna.

  16. I like Netflix, especially Breaking Bad and Nurse Jackie. Downton Abbey was great but as the seasons progress I find it's not as good.

  17. You have no idea how bad I hate word ver. It drives me away for real.

  18. thanks for the movie recommendation. I've seen him in few movies but don't recall which ones at the moment.
Yeah the charities must get good results from the guilt trip approach since I see it so often. I do use those return labels but honestly they build up quicker than the limited amount of mailing we do.

  19. Another annoying thing... the 800 number calls and the I-don't-recognize-this-area-code calls.

I haven't gotten the dimes in awhile, but for some reason, I never felt guilty. I used to be a computer programmer, so I know that a computer is on the other end of the letter and visualize it and not a person who knows that I put the dime in my change basket throw the letter away. lol
However, I'm fortunate to be able to donate to charitable causes (like St. Judes, Red Cross, etc.) throughout the year when I chose to.
I'd like to see that movie!

  20. I just pulled a nickel off some mailing this week and felt guilty about it. Maybe they think the guilt will get people to donate? I don't know but like you said, it must work. Have a fabulous weekend!

  21. Hi Joanna, stopping in to say hi, I love Kelly OZborne. and well your right up there on the top of my list. will be around more in the fall. hugs my friend.

  22. Love the idea about word verification - my iPad is constantly auto-correcting this, and it often takes me several tries. So ermines I just give up.

  23. Sometimes I get so frustrated with the word verifications that I give up on commenting!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Oh, I hate those word verifications! Sometimes I have to keep hitting the button to give me a new one because I just can't figure them out! I do Netflix, but I forget to send the movies back and get new ones! Don't think I can handle a prison story. I need uplifting, positive stuff these days. Still Mine looks like my kind of flick, though! Great frags!

  25. You truly lead an extraordinary life!!!

  26. Word verification is SO annoying. I really have to LOVE your blog to tolerate that nonsense.
    I think Kelly is adorable.
That movie sounds so good, I hope it shows in Philly.
We do not NetFlix yet but we have been talking about it for quite awhile now.
I was happily surprised by the big four dis :)
    Have a wonderful weekend.

  27. I'm with you on the guilt gifts that come in the world. I hate throwing the stuff away, but I don't need it....I have read the labels and such don't cost the senders very much, so spend those dimes well!

  28. I've always liked James Cromwell, but I'm not sure I've heard of Ms Bujold.

  29. Love the word verification idea, Joanna! It would make it something to look forward to, instead of something to annoy you when you can't read the blurry combination of letters and numbers no matter how you adjust your bifocals on your nose.

  30. That movie sounds charming!
And I giggled at your "arrangement" with the March of Dimes.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Stupid word verification! Another example of the bad guys making life difficult for the rest of us! I love your brilliant ideas, though. If we have to have it, at least make the experience interesting!

  32. I keep hearing about Orange is the new Black. I might have to check it out. We do have Netflix.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I believe I'll be doing NetFlix once we get into our new place. I have a lot of catching up to do and the winters are going to be long!

Genevieve Bujold.. I hadn't heard much about her in a very long time. She's from my native Montreal. I still pictured her at 30 something.. ish. This sounds like a must see movie. Thanks. :)

  34. I take the dines and labels without a second thought, It's unsolicited merchandise.

I do like Netflix - I don't have TV but I like to be able to stream some shows and movies. Haven't seen Orange is the New Black, but now I'm curious. (adding it to queue...)

  36. Completely agree with the word verification and I really really want to live somewhere where I can stalk celebrities... May neighbours are goats!!

  37. When you see all the Emmy nominees from sources other than network TV, it's understandable why there are fewer viewers tuning in to the award ceremony. My sister always complains that she's never heard of most of the shows nominated.

  38. I too feel guilty when I get solicitations from the March of Dimes or other disability organizations. Hubby and I invest quite a bit of personal time and money in local disability groups, but I still feel like crap. Why is that? LOL

  39. Word Verification.. a necessary evil sometimes.
I hate it, but have it on my blog to block the HUNDREDS of spam comments I got EVERY DAY.

  40. I'm watching Orange is the New Black and I like it , but it's no House of Cards. I am actually also reading the book the series is based on.

  41. When I was home last time, I watched the entire seasons of "Lost", "24",
"Glee" and "Downton Abbey" - it took me my whole seven months at home to see them. Sadly, there isn't Netflix in India but I can watch movies free....no Bollywood ones, though, like I used to do since there are no English subtitles on them here.
