I was bit by a dog-- Not my neighbor's dog who mysteriously appeared on our roof-- By a yip-yappy, scrawny mutt that belongs to a friend.
The dog and I have met on countless occasions in the past two years with no problems but for whatever reason, my leg suddenly became his chew toy of choice. Four significant puncture wounds from his very big teeth, a tetanus shot, and no swimming in the pool for the past month later, and I'm kinda over it.
Then I was attacked by an extremely hungry mosquito who literally chewed it's way around the dog bite on my calf and well, I'm really over it now.
My leg is still nasty looking-- purple and red marks with bruises, and has a long way to go to "normal". It's awful hot and humid here in Los Angeles-- So hot, I'd actually endure putting on a bathing suit to swim and cool off rather than sweat it out on the sidelines. And, I had been inching closer to actually getting a dog of our own.
Now, the dog idea is permanently on hold and the bathing suit I bought still has the tags on it.
Sigh. Is summer over yet?
How's by you?

oh no...not a good start to summer....i found a bees nest in our grap arbor the other day...unfortunately the finding was when i bumped on of the posts with the mower...and they swarmed...and my back took a beating....uck...
ReplyDeleteOh no. That's so disheartening. Frank got bitten on the hand a few years back and it took quite some time to heal. Darn mosquitoes just added itch to injury.
ReplyDeleteCan you cover it up with plastic and just enjoy the pool?
Keep in mind that the vast majority of well cared for dogs would never even think of biting. Don't let this little nasty ruin pet ownership for you. He's the exception for sure.
I'm sorry! I was bitten by a german shepherd as a teen and I'm still kind of scared of them. And mosquitoes are just a royal pain!
ReplyDelete.
Dogs and mosquitoes, now that is a nasty business. I hope you heal quickly so you can cool down in the pool, or ocean.
ReplyDeleteYikes! The dog (yes, we all have to be careful, no matter how tame they seem), the heat, the mosquitoes. And here I thought California was supposed to be just this side of Paradise! Anyway, take care and hope the rest of your summer goes more smoothly.
ReplyDeleteYou should have brought dog treats.
ReplyDeleteYour story sounds like no fun what so ever. You could juice it up a little and include a pack of coyotes or maybe a bear.
Wishing you quick healing.
Crumbs! Joanna. How awful being bitten by the dog. I bet it's owner was very embarrassed. It's very often the yappy little dogs that are the culprits. And mosquitoes are dreadful things. I was bitten on both lower legs by horseflies and they swelled up something rotten and couldn't get my shoes on - still can't properly although swelling is going down now. Lower legs take a beating from things like that.
ReplyDeleteAnd poor Brian - didn't know that!
Hugs ~ Eddie :)
I delivered mail for 28 years without ever being bit, and then got bit twice in the first three months of this year, both times by smaller dogs. The second one was just a nipped finger, but the first one got me high on the calf and left a scar that's going to stay. The worst part was, the owner just walked away! I said, hey, your dog just bit me! He chuckled and kept walking! He changed his tune when the cop showed up at his house to make sure the dog had had its shots. (It had.)
ReplyDeleteThat's not good! Did anything happen to the dog after it bit you? If a dog bites someone here they are often put down. (lethal injection).
ReplyDeleteI hope you can get back into your pool soon.
Well, at least once people get a look at your leg, it should clear the pool and you'll have it all to yourself!
ReplyDeleteActively sweating here in Western Mass. It's as humid here as those Virginia summers of my childhood. And yes, we have window air conditioners but rarely think to put them on. Not the sharpest tools in the box, here.
so sorry to hear about your dog bite, scary! I am enjoying the summer and wish it would never end. But it was a cold winter.
ReplyDeleteDog bites are no fun...I hope you heal quickly and get to take the tags off that new bathing suit soon.
ReplyDeleteoh my goodness JJ, that had to have been awful. I can't imagine how bad it hurt and still hurts and then to add insult to injury - the damn mosquito. You poor thing. If you lived closer I'd bake you something sinful to drown your sorrows in and make you glad you can't put the swimsuit on, haha. Hugs!!
ReplyDeleteSummer can only get better from here, Jo! So sorry you've been sidelined so far with those various bites! I hope you do go for a swim very soon!
ReplyDeleteHave you considered a nice, calm older cat?
I hate little yip-yappy dogs. I did so before hearing your story. After hearing your story, I knew I had been right :-)
ReplyDeleteA record setting drought in California and you still have to deal with mosquitoes?!?! That is just not fair! How your leg is all better soon!
ReplyDeleteOh. Oh no. I am sorry, sorry, sorry to hear this. I hope you feel better - fully healed and recovered and happy soon.
ReplyDeleteI swear our mosquitoes are a half inch wide -- before they spread their wings. Huge this year.
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry to hear about your bite. It's worse when it's a dog of friends (or relatives). I sure hope they are bringing you food and sending you flowers. Every day.
Enjoying your blog! I found you through searching for blogs by women and the Huffpost list came up. I am a stand up comic 50ish and just started blogging.

Gah! Our sweet boy Max, who is the most gentle dog ever (I know, I know everybody says that after their dog rips someone's face off) inexplicably bit a friend of mine on the back of her leg while she was leaving. Thank God she was wearing jeans so no breaking of the skin. Now Max will have to always be crated when company comes. It was painful for her and mortifying for me. Hope you're feeling better!
ReplyDeleteJoanna, life is one adventure after another, isn't it? Our bodies heal but the memories are stored away for when we dig into the files and turn them into fond reminiscences. I try to find something positive about each incident in my life or at least something redeemable. Good to hear your leg is healing properly and your spirits are lifting.
ReplyDeleteWow, guess you'll be glad when it's cool enough to wear those trendy track pants that are everywhere right now.
ReplyDeleteHope your leg heals fast. If it was me, I might be tempted to put a few Barbie band-aids on.
Jings, getting bitten by a dog. That's rough...
ReplyDeleteWell, here it is, August. By now you must be healing ok, and even had a swim (I hope). Fall is right around the corner (wasn't that fast?). I hope the end of summer and the warm first days of autumn bring you adventure and joy. Maybe a day trip to an estate for a bit of wine tasting perhaps? Stay well Joanna, wishing you all the best. xo d
ReplyDeleteOuch - poor you!
ReplyDeleteI'm late to comment, I hope you're feeling better now!!
ReplyDeleteOh, my goodness, that sounds terrible. Thank heavens, you didn't develop cellulitis, which might have landed you in the hospital on IV antibiotics. Spider bites on both ankles, at different times, did that for me. I've had five hospitalizations because I didn't respond to oral antibiotics..and they didn't think it was poisonous spiders that caused the harm.
ReplyDeleteOne of the vaccines I got for my India trips is a series of "pre-rabies" shots...that cost about $1000 - that protect you long enough, if you're bitten by a rabid animal in a rural area, so you can get to a city hospital for a rabies series. There are so many monkeys, homeless strays dogs, etc, I thought it better to be poor and safe rather than sorry.
Knock, knock?
ReplyDeleteOUCH! Hugs from a Nurse to make it better!
ReplyDeleteOH, No, I hope you are doing more better now. I know that hurts! Praying for Cali to get some rain it has been intense out there this year! Take care!!
ReplyDeleteI hope you're doing better now, sweet pea! *hugs* xoxox
