Although I have much to be thankful for, 2009 truly kicked me to the curb multiple times and I was glad to see it finally come to an end.
Aside from the disastrous economy, our hideously expensive sewer condom and our currently sinking pool and deck, it was a year filled with illness, surgery, hospitals, and way too many funerals.
More times than I can count last year, I looked up to the smog-filled Los Angeles skies and asked out loud-- "When will it end?". Each time, within days, it seemed like yet another shoe dropped and something else went wrong.
So as the ball dropped over New York's Times Square and the last seconds of 2009 click away, I reluctantly looked to the skies, at the beautiful Blue Moon shining bright, and asked one more time for the craziness of '09 to lift and let the skies smile again.
The next morning, blue skies were delivered but they usually are on New Year's Day-- Just in time for the Pasadena Rose Parade-- So all the folks freezing back East can see sunny Southern California and decide to move here. But this time something was different.
Our back yard overlooks a big golf course. We don't have any back yard neighbors-- just a lot of grass and trees. And since our house sits on a hill, we look down to the golf course and straight out into the "green part" of the trees. We can't actually see any tree trunks from inside the house.
After I dragged myself out of bed January 1st and away for the second showing of the Parade, I walked into our living room and stared straight out the picture window and into the back yard. The view was unusually grand! The mountains and the famous Hollywood sign were in all their glory.
Maybe 2010 would be different.
As I stood taking in the view, I thought about the Rose Parade and the perfect, crystal clear, blue skies that only grace our presence a handful of days per year, when my Beloved husband walked in and admired the great view too. So did a few other family members that morning. All of us paused at the clarity of the skies, the colors of the mountains and the prominence of the Hollywood Sign.
But never once did any of us remember that we had not been able to actually SEE the Hollywood sign from our living room before! (We could see the sign from other parts of the house and yard, but never the living room.)
Seriously!
It took a few hours before Beloved went upstairs to his office and looked out the window-- Which is when he saw the huge tree, that used to block our view, had fallen over. Sometime between 6pm New Year's Eve and noon on New Year's Day, the tree-- which was a huge, thick pine that was growing at a 45 degree angle and taking up a lot of space-- fell over.
Don't get me wrong, I love trees and have planted more than my share, but this particular tree's time had, apparently, come-- or should I say gone. There was no storm, no lightening, no wind and the tree did not appear to be diseased. The tree was on the golf course property, it did not hurt anyone or damage anything. It just fell over..... and out of sight-- revealing a spectacular view from our living room that looks like this.....
The view in the middle-- between the two big trees-- That's where the tree used to be! It literally was a wall of green.
Now it's wide open! The white "line" you see on the dark mountain toward the right is the Hollywood sign.
So I'm taking the "sign" as a sign-- a very good sign-- at the start of 2010, that the skies are clearing and a new day has dawned-- a kinder, gentler, healthier day and hopefully year.
Do you believe in "signs"?

I do! And I have been to the Rose Parade once, when I was like 11. We camped out all night!
Can I live in your back yard? :)
Very pretty, Joanna. I love your view.... and golf.
Do I believe in signs? Hmmm. That's a good question. I would say, not usually, but they have a way of believing in me.
Beautiful view and yes I definately believe in signs. Here's to a great 2010!!
Wow, Joanna, I am envious of your view! And yes, I believe in signs!
Yes I believe in signs...and feelings...and I have a strong feeling that 2010 is going to be a good year for us all. :)
Well, that is wonderful...you got a wonderful view, without having to blast the tree out of the way...and I doubt that the golf course is going to put a huge new one in its place. You'll have to invite folks over for cocktails in the evening on your nice deck!
That's remarkable that the tree just chose to fall over. Still, it made it very nice for you. I hope things settle down for you this year.

Awwwwessssooommmmme!!! That view is spectacular!!! I see "messages" all the time. And here's to a wonderful 2010...we are all due that is for sure!! TYJ!!!

Why wouldn't you take the sign as a sign? It isn't often that a tree just ups and leaves granting you a new perspective on things. And I bet your pool not only stops sliding, but rights itself! How's that for positive thinking?
Oh Joanna... I wish only good things for you in 2010 my sweet friend. You certainly have shouldered your share of burdens in 2009. Only smiles this year, okay?
Love you.
I do - and I love your sign and your view!
i'll take your sign in hopes for the new year. 2009 kicked us in the heiny...
nice view!
Oh, I sure do believe in signs...and I believe if you miss them, God will make them bigger and more effective at capturing your attention.....not always pleasant!
What a view!!!!!!! Maybe another tree could accidentally fall down and widen it further? I say accidentally because they look awfully healthy.....but....maybe they're in a weakened condition!
Now WE kick IT to the curb.
And what a good sign that is.
For a better year!
Wow, the view is definitely a gift, and a sign.
Happy 2010!
Yes, I do believe in signs. Every time I find a penny I see it as a sign from my mother who died a long time ago. My daughter, also named Joanna, was praying for a sign in regard to her now husband when they first started seeing each other as she was driving and the name of the next street she passed was the same as his last name. They are now very happily married. I think all signs point to a good new year for you, Joanna. All the best.
You are blessed. It was ten below on the Ponderosa this morning. Maybe the tree came down for the same reason your pool is movin'. 'Just a thought. Never the less, you have one fantastic view there. So kick back and enjoy the view and have one fantastic 2010 my friend.
May God fill your year with promised blessings!
I do, indeed, believe in signs. And, I also find this a glowing metaphor for how we see things in life. Each time something dies or moves on, something new can take its place. A new person, new environment, new hopes, new possibilities, new vistas, new opportunities, new ways of 'seeing'.
I can't say 2009 was bad for me, but I know it's been terribly difficult for so very many.
I look forward to 2010 taking the journey with you, my Sister in Snark & Love.
I wish I could believe in signs but it seems that I've become jaded by too many disappointments.
It's like that saying, "Do you know how to make God laugh?
Tell Him you plans!"
Woo-hoo! I woke up this morning to the golf course trimming and topping more trees in the way of my view! The skies really ARE opening up around here! I hope they trim ALL DAY LONG :-)
Thanks everyone for your support!

What a sign! A new start for a new decade!
I would take this as a good sign too. I sure do hope this year is much better for you and your Beloved. Healthy and less stress. For me, 2008 was my worst year ever. Ever. More than I could explain to you. Sometimes I thought it was more than I could get through. But I did and 2009 was like waking up after being in a lifelong coma. I started living and acknowledging each breath in 2009. So for me, 2009 is special and wondrous. I have such hope for 2010 but more than that, I am ready for it. Hugs to you, Joanna.
Most definately...even with the loss of our pet, I know there is sign to be seen.
Great sign - er... I think. Great view anyway. Happy New Year.
definitely a sign of better things to come! :-)
When I asked my boss for the day off tomorrow he gave me a sign of the two-fingered variety. I took that to be a 'no'...
that's a gorgeous view and I think I do believe in signs although I try not to.
I think that's a great "sign!" That's incredible that you can see the Hollywood sign from your house. I hope 2010 treats you better and you have much to look forward to.
Yes, I do believe in signs. Though I don't usually get one the reads, "Hollywood." I don't think many people are sad to see 2009 go.
This post about signs reminds me of the movie with Steve Martin, "L.A. Story."
I love it! Your "sign" was actually a SIGN!! What a wonderous start to a new year :)
When I first moved to L.A. back in '72 I lived on Beachwood Drive and looked up at the Hollywood sign every day. Then in the eighties my friends and I would ride our horses up there. I'm in the Santa Barbara area now. Maybe we'll get to connect in person one of these days.
2009 sucked for me too, but 2010 is looking promising. Today I rode a great horse and won $200. Yay!
I do believe in signs and it looks like you got a beauty! Happy, Happy New Year and hopes for a better 2010!
There is nothing more beautiful to my way of thinking than a clear sunny day in southern Cal. I miss that more than anything.
I'm trying to orient myself to where you live. With that view of the sign you must be northwest of Hollywood and in the hills but I'm having trouble placing it, are you in the Santa Monica Mtns? Just curious to know if I'm still a native.
That is so awesome! What a gorgeous view! I love trees too, but this is way better!
Oh wow that is so awesome!!Yes it is a Sign!! A wonderful sign of a great 2010!!
My cousins had front row seats at the Parade...I have never been even though I was invited every year..that is until we moved when I was 13..You know I still miss CA!! Do you mind me asking what city you live in..My family is all over CA north and south.
I love trees too, but prefer they don't block a great view.
What a neat post! You know, Joanna, I haven't heard one single person say they are sorry to see 2009 go. In with the new!
My parents took me with them to see the Rose Parade and attendant football game when I was 14. All I remember is being keenly interested in how the two young women in front of us had their hair styled. Football game? What football game? LOL.
I would certainly see that as a good sign!
What a view..it's awesome!
Wow! Enjoy the view.
It sure sounds like a sign to me. That's some view you have there. May 2010 be good to you.
I just finished a post about a lucky penny - but I tend not to believe in signs of the that you asked about. Now being able to see the Hollywood sign is a good sign for resale value I imagine.
Do you think the moving pool knocked something that knocked over the tree?
I often think that signs are always there, but we are not clear enough of mind to see them.
I'm happy for you that you are happy for your new found view.
best wishes
Ribbon
definitely take it as a sign! may all your wishes come true for 2010! sending you a big spanish hug!
What a view... and sometimes change is the awesome we couldn't see at first.
And yes, I believe in signs. Very much so.
I'm always interpreting things as "signs". I hope you 2010 brings you great things!
Nice!!!
I definitely believe in signs!
Happy New Year!
That must be a great "sign"!!!!!!
2009 pretty much s*cked.
Here's to much, much better.
(Oh, and can I come visit? Your back yard looks fab and we'll be visiting SoCal sometime next summer....) ;) ;)
I absolutely believe in signs, but also believe that "signs" are very personal.
What a wonderful sign - farther view, clearer vision.
2010 will be a great year for you and your family.
What a view!!!! You are so fortunate to live in such a place. Whatever happened to your pool?
